Circus Dress or Circus Blouse?

I've never actually been to the circus, but I imagine it might be a little bit like this dress: loud, crowded, and dangerous.  How can a dress be dangerous, you ask?  Well enlarge one of the photos and you will find that this dress is held together entirely by buttons.  7 buttons, to be exact. When you wear a dress that only has 7 buttons holding it together- you have a 1 in 7 chance of being very embarrassed.  Especially when your body is stuffed into it and you're feeling a bit crowded.
For this very reason, I avoid this dress in my closet.  I mean, if I wore it to church I'd be worried every time I stood up, crossed my legs, or walked too briskly that 1 of my 7 buttons would call it quits. Or all 7 of them, for that matter.

I have been debating (for 3.5 years) whether or not I should cut this dress in half and just wear it as a blouse.

So, what do you say? Should I take my scissors to the Circus Dress?

NOOOO!!! I love this dress! Maybe you could use some cleverly hidden safety pins on this bad boy to feel more comfortable in it? Plus, if you want to wear it as a top, just throw a skirt on over it like you did above. No need to cut!

I agree with above comment. Wear a slip under.. maybe a full slip. So cute worn either way

LOVE the dress! don't cut it!!

i'd be parnoid too about the buttons -- but its such a cute dress! maybe get a slip to wear under it? i do also like it as a blouse too ... what a predicament!

For sure don't cut the dress. How about you just sew up the middle seam and leave the button on the top to be done or undone for dress removal. don't you dare cut it.

Alice Wills Gold said...

Oh and get some good wears out of it before you have children because at that point you won't want to wear anything that isn't midcalf because your kids will embarrass you by pulling it up at church.

i love this dress and think you should definitely keep it as a dress!! the polka-dots are super cute and i think it's great just layering a skirt over it to transform into a dress!

cute & little

No leave it a dress and just wear it both ways it is so pretty.

This dress is loud and crowded?! Not at all! It's cute the way it is. I agree, if you wear a slip (a full slip, I should think) underneath it'll be fine.

I love it either way honestly. And in answer to your comment on my blog-check f21 online for really cheap jeans; the ones I am wearing there were 9.50 :)

and How did you do your blog so you could put x-large pics on it without getting cut off??

oh my gosh! i have this same dress and have the same problem, and you are genius for thinking of the blouse. i know that the commenters have good intentions but really, this dress is hard to maneuver and its cuteness comes at great risks, especially when you are playing the organ at church and it comes unbuttoned (not that i know from experience). i also have this dress in the black with tiny polka dots version and i think i'm going to go blousey on both of them. bless you monica.

the dress is adorraabbllee
BUT if made into a top would make an amazing layering piece.
hard call.
if it's not comfy, i'd give it the snip!
BUT, thats just my fashion philosophy haha

If you'd cut it I'd be FOREVER angry with you. If you can't love this 7 button beauty, please send it to me! I will welcome it with open arms (but not too far open or the buttons would pop :D)

LOVE it!

hmm tricky! Looks great both ways, it would be a shame to chop it! I think the slip idea is a good one : )

STOOOOOOOPPPPP. Do not, I repeat DO NOT cut the circus dress. It's fabulous just the way it is! Buy a sip to go underneath but leave that pretty baby alone.
Cheers,

This is a great dress, and as shown, you can wear it either as a dress OR a blouse as is, so I would go with the advice of other commenters and wear a slip underneath when the situation calls for it, and keep it as a dress!

Thanks for stopping by my blog--your blog is great!

No. Don't cut the dress. It's very trendy. Just use a reliable belt to ensure safety. :) Thanks for visiting fashion trends blog, by the way. I followed your blog too. :)

You should do whatever would make you most comfortable. I'm for the wear-with-a-slip approach, because this dress is Fantastic (with a capital F) if you think you'd wear it that way. But, if you'd feel better with it as a blouse, then go for it! :)

I would definitely trim the dress. I am a fan of shorter styles, though. Show me some skin, baby. That's how I roll.
That being said, I still love this dress. I don't think it is that loud. It's more ... crazy ... than loud.

definitely agree w/ the crowd. DO NOT cut that dress!!! if you're feeling crafty (and were going to make a blouse) just sew on a few more buttons?

the black skirt can use a pair of scissors though. it'd look great at the knee.

Don't cut it! You can already wear it as a blouse by tucking it in, and if you've been this hesitant to do it you shouldn't...it looks darn cute both ways (dress and blouse).

Anna of IHOD said...

I think the dress is amazing! If you can get away with wearing a skirt over it to do both options that would be sweet. :)

i think you should leave it as a dress so if anything you can also wear it as a top but still have the versatility of the dress love it so cute!

LOVE the dress!! However, with the skirt is adorable too. 3 hours is a long time to be paranoid about clothing, so I think comfort takes priority here!

I absolutely love it as a dress. It's also cute as a skirt! Just take a cue from me--keep it as a dress, but wear it both ways. Makes it twice as versatile!

Only it's from Forever 21 and the ruffles might be a little different. And this one fits you GREAT, mine is a little big. Never thought to wear it as a top - will have to try that sometime!

I know I'm behind, but my thought is that if you don't wear it now keeping it as a dress does you no good. If you'll wear it as a top more I would say cut it!
