Loosey Goosey

Sometimes I like to make up fashion rules in my head that may or may not actually exist.  My roommates made me aware of this strange habit in college.  Today I need you guys to tell me if this rule is real or if it is a figment of my imagination.

The rule doesn't have a name but it goes a little something like this: if you are wearing something loose on bottom, you should wear something fitted on top.  Likewise, if you are wearing something super tight on the bottom, you should wear something a little more loose on top.  I'm not sure where this came from, but I have lived by this rule for quite some time.  So, when I bought these Gap Jeans, I never imagined wearing them with anything else besides a fitted top.

I haven't actually worn this outfit out in the real world because I just don't know if I can break this Monica Rule.
If you're wondering why that shirt looks familiar, it's because I wear it all the time-see here and here.  It's just so comfortable and airy.  It works well with the stifling humidity.
Shirt: TJ Maxx Jeans: Gap Belt: Thrift Store Shoes: Target

So, can I go out in public with a double flowy ensemble?  Or, should I just keep wearing these jeans with fitted tops?

i have that same rule! especially because of my chest and my hips which can make me look bigger than i really am. but this outfit really works! i am sure it really depends on your body type.

i agree with the girl above... i think it depends on your body type... i definitely use that same rule. but i actually like that outfit together. i think it all depends.

i love your hair like that, too!

You look great! I agree w/ the ladies above - depends on the body type!

I would say your jeans are fitted enough in the thighs and waist that you still look like you have a girlish figure. I like it! Maybe it's because I'm ALL about comfort these days.

I agree in part with your rule - if it's tight on the bottom, NO tight on the top. But with loose & loose, I think it comes down to proportion. Your pants and top are both loose, but the shirt is short enough the proportions look great. (I hope this makes sense!!!)

I always thought it was a real rule, too :) I am not a huge fan of the two items together (but I like them separately!). I guess the rule is just too ingrained in me.

i thought it was a real rule too and i've always gone by it, but i think heat and humidity beats any fashion rule!! i agree with the people above that as long as it fits your body type and proportions are right, it can work. even though i think it would be more flattering to have a fitted shirt or vice versa, i think this works on you.

Typically, yeah, that's one of the "standards" in balancing proportions. However, I think wearing two looser items like this looks fantastically casual and chic on you! I like it!

I think this is a good outfit, however as far as the whole balancing act, I think you should wear what feels right to YOU! I mean who cares what anybody thinks!

I think this outfit looks great! I love it. Go for it. :) I am really jealous of that top actually. haha! And I think that's a good "general" rule. But sometimes- rules need to be thrown out the window.

Pretty shirt! I just wore something super floaty as well. It's so nice in the heat!

I used to have that same rule. I still sort of do. But this outfit absolutely works. I give it the go ahead!

Well I usually like to follow that rule too, but seeing this outfit on you is great! I don't think it looks too baggy or anything like that; just really cute!

Okay, that is totally a rule. You did NOT make it up, so you're good there. And I think that, like what has already been said, the jeans are fitted enough in the waist/butt/thighs that it doesn't look odd to have a loose shirt on top. I'm not totally crazy about it, but it works on you. BUT, I'm wondering what it might look like if you belted the shirt... like you did on your other posts in that shirt.... Thoughts? Either way, I LOVE the shirt, LOVE the jeans, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE your hair!!! =)

I guess I don't see the pants as particularly "loose." I mean, they aren't skinny jeans, but they aren't harem pants either. They seem structured, and I think structured and loose can go together just swimmingly, as you've done here.

Everything I know about fashion I learned from Stacy and Clinton. ;)

(PS I'm so glad you left a comment on my blog! I am loving reading what you post here and you're already added to my reader! Yay for new blog friends!)

I tend to follow the same rule but I actually love this look. Double loose is way better than double tight. I'm beginning to think it's more about proportions than anything. Maybe there's a new rule to be created here...

i always do the loose/fitted rule, just because I don't like to feel like a big garbage bag, or a bean pole. I think you paired two loose items together nicely though, you look great :)

I'd keep only one of the pieces loose and the other tight/fitted. But if you like it, go for it!

I've definitely heard that rule, and I generally follow it! But I also agree with the girls above: it depends on your body type. You, my dear, look adorable and can definitely pull off wearing two loose fitting items. Go for it!

I've definitely heard of this rule before BUT loose tops and 70s pants are really in right now. I think it looks chic and comfy!

LOVE it all :)

I abide by the same rule, but this outfit looks fine because neither piece is too baggy. The pants aren't tight, but they are still tailored and flattering. I love loose fitting tops in the summer. I sweat so I get paranoid wearing shirts that are too fitted when it's hot!

Lovin' your top! It looks fabulous on you!

the double flowy ensemble is a dont for sure, you were right.
the pants and the shirt are both super cute, but would be much more flattering paired with something else.

I have generally followed that rule because of stacy and clinton but i agree with pretty much everyone else. The proportions and structure are GREAT in the two pieces so it looks fantastic on you!!

I know this is an old post but I've only just found it so I'll comment anyway, LOL. I do like these jeans are fitted enough at the top (which shows with the short shirt) that it works with the loose top. You know what does bother me about the outfit? You look like you don't have any feet! I think the pants should be shortened slightly or something. I don't know why that jumps out at me, but it does. Take it with a grain of salt though, because I am no fashionista!
