Spring Tablecloth

For those of you who are looking for a great weekend activity.  Seek no further.  I have your answer.  Sam's Club.  Or Costco, if you are so lucky as to have one in your town.

I made my weekly visit to Sam's Club for samples this weekend in a seemingly normal outfit.  Or, at least I thought so. While perusing the samples, I met an interesting Sample Distributor (is that what their job title is?).  He was an older man, probably in his mid sixties, with gray hair, an apron, and a cap on.  I stalled by his sample booth, waiting my turn to taste some Panera soup and as he handed me my styrofoam cup he jumped a little and said....

"Whoa.  Now that is an.....interesting.... outfit.  I mean look at it.. You've got nautical on top...and a spring tablecloth on bottom."
My first thought was: Nautical clothing is in this man's vocabulary?  Does he know what wolf tooth  is really called, too?

My second thought was:  Crap, do stripes and tablecloths not go together?

Shirt: Costco Skirt: Shade Shoes: Target

Even though I never had plans to ask about this outfit, the Sam's Club Sample Distributor really has me wondering.  Have I paired nautical stripes with the wrong skirt? Does your whole outfit have to be nautical if you have a nautical top?

no i think it totally works! i love it!

mixing patterns can work as long as you stay in the same color scheme which you definitely did here.

Haha an old man knew what nautical was?? I love mixing stripes and florals, and that skirt is NOT tablecloth-y (it's a word, just go with it) at all! I think you look fab!

Hahaha, what does he know?!? It looks fabulous! And seriously, that just cracks me up that he said "nautical". My husband would have simply said stripes. =)

That's hysterical. Personally, I think stripes and florals is one of the most commonly used pattern mixes. I love it and think you look great!

If you like it, go for it.

People think you have to be all matchy-matchy to have an outfit (I was one of those).

And what you call houndstooth I know as pied de poule (chicken legs). That's how they call it in France, and if it's fashion-related and French, it HAS to be true! Hahaha!

first, this. and i'd like to state for the record that i thought the look worked before i read the article.

second, after a work event last week i met a man who said "ah yes, i think i saw you last night. you were wearing a, um, interesting skirt." (it was just a bubble skirt and he was like 70, but i was a little caught off guard.)

You used the two pieces wonderfully together. These recent seasons nautical stripes can be used almost as a neutral. Well done and you look beautiful!

I think it works :) I think if you paired your nauticals together, you'd look too much like you should be in a Chaps ad or something :)
Maybe the Sample Distributor was flirting? he he.

I LOVE love love this outfit! This has to be my favorite one of the day. So my answer would be, "no he's wrong".

And we love trips to Sam's. I always indulge and get pizza and a giant Dr Pepper. It's just so cheap, I can't resist!! I wish we had a Costco close by, but Sam's will just have to do for now :)

That's a hilarious story. And even though I wouldn't take fashion advice from a 60 year-old Costco sample distributor (I'll go with that term too), he would have me doubting myself too! I like the pairing though, patterns together always gets me excited! Probably because I'm too scared to do it myself.
