A Stormin' Easter Dress

Today's full body pictures, unfortunately, are taken inside my tiny, dim, apartment.  If you're thinking, "Monica, why the heck would you do that?  You don't even know how to use a DSLR camera when the lighting is good." If that thought crossed your mind, first pat yourself on the back for being right, and then look at these pictures and you'll understand why I can't be outside.  And you'll understand my it's-storming-outside-and-I-have-no-electricity photos.

Good thing they put that cone there.  Otherwise, I don't think I would have known to turn my car around.
So as you can see, things have been a little crazy here in Knoxville, Tennessee.  We experienced some crazy storms and the largest power outage in Knoxville history.  But, don't worry.  Although I haven't had any electricity, my mind is still swarming with questions for my roommates.

Let's move on to some really important topics of discussion.  Like, what the heck to do with this thrift store dress I purchased five years ago and have NEVER worn.
I don't really like it plain.  It reminds me of a two-year-old's Easter dress.  But what can I do to it?  I don't know how to sew...so I can't really repurpose it.  I tried stuffing the top of the dress down and making it a skirt...but it was too lumpy.  The only thing I could think of was layering a bunch of crap on top of it.
Do I look mad? That's because I am.  I didn't realize how attached to electricity I was.
Sweater: JCPenney Ruffle top: Forever 21 Belt: Thrift store
Dress: Thrift store Shoes: TJ Maxx

How would you style this Easter dress? Can you think of anything? Or, should I send it back to the thrift store?

love this look. but i think you are right, i don't like it on its own. i think when it is used more like a "skirt" it works much better.

I really love that dress and I love how you styled it even more. You've given me inspiration on styling a similar dress that I never know how to wear!

I love this look! I think the dress is terrific. I have a couple of dresses that I never wear and you have inspired me to repurpose them with layers. I have to move away from thinking that a dress is just a dress and a skirt is just a skirt. I love it how a dress can be used as a skirt:)

Sincerely,

Julie

Oh my goodness, I'm glad you're safe! That storm looks like it was really dangerous!

I LOVE how you styled the dress. Yellow is a fantastic color with it! I think pink would be great too.

Oh my goodness, that is seriously a storm!! It looks the same way it looked over here after Hurricane Ivan! Eesh, that's scary.

But on a happier note, I actually LOVE that dress! I'd probably wear it plain and go bopping around like a cheery little kid in it. =) lol But I love how you styled it too. With the mustard cardi and red belt. So cute!

And ummm...if you decide to send it back to the thrift store, you could always just send it down here to Florida. I'll find a thrift store for you. *wink wink* =)

You love your polka dots, don't you? I do, too!

I think you hit the nail on the head with the layering idea. But it seems a little hot for summer (it storm all the time, right? :).

What if you tried layering it over a puffy-sleeved blouse, belted it, and added a big flower to one lapel? I think it would be super cute!

I lovey that dress!! Send it to me, send it to me!! Haha, kidding, sort of. ;-) I love how you've styled it, those two hues are absolutely gorgeous together and I love the extra detail of the belt too. x veronika

Mandi- I think that is a fabulous idea. Should I try it with the puffy sleeved ruffled shirt that I have on top of it right now?

Look at you girl!! I LOVE how you styled that dress!

New follower here! I love your site...as you said, my husband is so tired of hearing me ask.

I think it looks great layered as you have it. My only suggestion would be to change the shoes. They say (you know, that magnanimous "they" that no one has ever met) that you should never mix more then 3 colors (not including neutrals) together. If you had a great pair of red pumps to match the belt, I think the outfit would be perfect!

I am so impressed with how you styled it! I think it looks great. I would never think to put those colors together, but they are AWESOME! Nice job!

That dress is awesome! I would pair it with pink and yellow or maybe navy blue and pink?

Those storms look crazy! You had me cracking up with the cone in front of the tree picture!

It looks great with all the "crap" stuffed on top of it!

By the way, that mustard/yellow cardi is adorable!

Oh you did a great job layering here! The colors are great and even your updo matches with the entire vibe! Good one.

I'm sorry about the storms. At least you're okay? :) This year has been so frustrating weather-wise.

It isn't very often that I comment on fashion because I'm not usually that interested (sorry), but HOT DAMN do I love this outfit - well done!

My first instinct when I saw the dress hanging up was that it would look fabulous with a mustard sweater. Lo and behold, when I scrolled down there you were with a mustard sweater! And it does look fabulous!

So I totally woke up this morning and was like, "YELLOW AND TURQUOISE!! DO IT!" and then I come over here and you have got me beat already. I think those looks great! How about with a blazer, too? Did somebody say that already? I'm too lame to scroll up..

Hey! First of all, thank you for following me. I am now following you... love your blog! :)
Second.. we have had crazy weather here in KY as well. I lost my internet/phone/cable connection for a couple of days or so, but not my electricity. It was still a horrible hardship though. lol
Third... LOVE the dress. LOVE what you did with it.
If you take it back to the thrift store, tell them to hold it for me!! :D

I LOVE the layered crap look! FAB outfit!

Layering is one option, but I live in Florida and am of an age and weight that I am HOT just thinking about layers. If you don't sew, find somewhere (the dry cleaners?) where alterations are done. Ask for a consultation and see if they would turn it into a high waisted skirt. Or any kind of skirt. Ask about cost... Or enjoy living somewhere that isn't 90F plus much of the year.

this is one of my favorite outfits of the whole blog! i can't get over how cute it is - the colors are so bright and the arrangement is so unexpected, yet awesome.

Send it back to the store..haha! That's hilarious. I really do wish that was an option though. I really would have liked to see what the dress looked like with the top tucked in-you definitely gave me a new idea.

What about sticking a classic white button down underneath and belting? I use that trick often with jumpery-type dresses. I think it classes it up a bit more than a tee.

love the yellow over that teal dress - such a pretty color combo!

This is my favorite look of yours! This is such a cute look, so retro!!!

This. Outfit. Is. Perfect. I adore this look - fabulous styling, colors, everything!

Other ideas - Maybe try a shirt underneath the dress, or a blazer belted over it. Stripes paired with the polka dots could be really fun :). Just a thought :).

This look is absolutely perfect. I must find a way to copy the styling! GReat JOb! Cheers!

um, well, I love your layers of 'crap' over it- totally fetching- but maybe you could try actually over-sweetifying it with a white lace top underneath (my latest obsesession...)
