Jeans, Jeans, The Magical Fruit

This past weekend my husband went canoeing and cliff jumping with some of his friends....and girls weren't invited.  So what does a lone woman do with her Saturday?  Catch up on homework, studying, and grading papers? No.  Go to the gym and burn a bunch of calories? Nope.  Go to every Sam's Club and TJ Maxx in Knoxville? Ding, ding, ding.  (PS- Sam's Club was sampling peanut butter Snickers this weekend.  FULL peanut butter Snickers.  Not just a little bite.  Have you guys tried those things?  They are amazing.)

Luckily I had a shirt that needed to be returned to TJ Maxx.  And I didn't have the receipt, which means.....FREE MONEY TO TJ MAXX.  Usually I hold on to my TJ Maxx store credit and wait for a special occasion to spend it, but I was feeling a little bit crazy (and possibly depressed that I wasn't canoeing on a lake) and I spent some of it.

I purchased one item that seemed pretty silly.  A floral dress.  That is way too short.

Dress: TJ Maxx Jeans: TJ Maxx Shoes: Target Necklace: 5 old necklaces intertwined into 1
Since I never got into the whole legging-under-dress thing  (My body and spandex don't get along),  I had to go to my next best option- Jeans.
And, these jeans are pretty similar to leggings- they're like magical jeans- they look like jeans, but they feel like stretch pants.

Since I won't wear leggings and I won't wear this dress by itself....I have two options here: wear this dress over jeans or take it back to TJ Maxx (and have more free money).

But, can you wear jeans under a dress?

On a scale from 1-10, how do you feel about jeans underneath a too-short-dress?

Stop it! Don't do it.                                                                  eh, it's fine                                                          Ah, yeah dawg.

10! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! This outfit is bomb! I love the shoes! I love the jeans! I love the dress. I REALLY love your hair! And I love the necklace(s). Definitely keep it!!! =)

1. Sorry! But if you did a quick hemming job and turned the too-short-dress into a top, the outfit would quickly hit 11. ADORE the necklace!

10. I'm a huge fan of skinny jeans under dresses. I like it better than leggings. Here's a recent take on it. Jeans and Dress

10. I love this look, and it is super flattering.( I am currently sporting a little postpartum baby tummy.) I think belting is key. You look cute!!

Brianne said...

Really, I would normally say 1. But, this is super cute! Love it!

I really love it! I love the dress and even love it over the jeans- the way you wear it, at least. I want this dress!

5. Only because I think it would look better if your jeans weren't cuffed, but I like the look. Very cute!

Jameil said...

Depends on the dress. This dress? 8! The cuff is throwing me off as are the chunky pearls. I'm not sure if it's that you need one or the other but there's an imbalance. But yes, I dig the dress. I say keep!

SO cute. I've rocked dresses over jeans before and this look is fantastic!

lori said...

id say about a 6... but it has huge potential. i LOVE the dress. so i think i would definitely say to make it work! i like it with skinnies... but i agree with tiffany about the cuff. it takes the focus away from the dress... so i say either a smaller cuff (if you must) or a cropped pair of skinnies would be better.

OR i do like the idea of hemming the dress and making it a top. or is there any material to let out the hem and make it longer?

i really like this outfit!! i have rocked jeans under a dress before, ususally its more of an early fall outfit for me.

10. Ah, yeah dawg.

You're outfit is cute. Looks like a {not too long} tunic over jeans. Flattering. Not too long or too baggy. Cute shoes too! Target is my fave.

All in all, two thumbs up.

10- The dress is similar to a tunic so it works. Plus I actually love the way you styled this whole outfit and think leggings would have killed it.

I love the pattern on the dress! I agree with some of the commenter that if it were shorter it would def make the outfit work a bit better.

I can't believe you find such great stuff at TJMaxx. My mom loves that store and finds great things all the time too. I could never get results like you guys do.

10!! This is my favorite outfit you have worn so far. I am going to buy those shoes today after seeing them on you. :)

SoFashionistica said...

I really like the dress, however it is a bit too short. Hmmmm.......you should try wearing it with opaque tights to make it work.

Lindsey Rose said...

Uhhhh, you could make anything look cute!

I've done it so many times. I usually do it in the summer with shorts or capris. I think it looks good.

I really like this outfit! I think jeans-and-a-dress is definitely a case-by-case basis, but this combo looks really nice together!

You could also do a longish pair of denim (or black) shorts with this. They'll cover what needs to be covered, but they'll let you show off some leg!

Becca said...

I have worn leggings or jeans under too short dresses but I have also added length to some. You can get lace or a complimentary color fabric. I've done both, love the outfit though, I say go for it!

10 and i'm not just being nice haha! i do jeans under short dresses all the time :) adorable!

Laura said...

I love it just as is...looks so cute. The jeans are a perfect touch since the dress is on the shorter side!

Haha 10! I used to be suuuuper into the dress over jeans look, and now you're inspiring me to go for the gold! ;)

Thanks for your comment on my blog! I love the whole concept of your site - I can relate to so many of the questions that have come up. Now following. I give dresses over jeans a 5 - to me it usually looks like two outfits on one person but I like the short length of the dress and complementary colours work here. I also like the look of slim leather pants under a floaty pastel dress - not that I own any myself!

Savannah said...

I feel like it never looks right on me, maybe because I'm so short, but I'm loving this. You look fabulous! I think you should definitely do it again!

christie said...

Love this look! The dress is adorable. I'm with the other commenter who said about liking it even better without cuffed jeans. It still works, though, and the shoes are great!

4. it's not terrible, just not doing anything for me.

mama marchand said...

Well, 10 for you! I think this dress is short enough to pull this look off ... much longer and I'd go with 1. But, I'm convinced you can wear anything! ;)

MONster said...

I think you guys are totally right about the cuffed jeans! I'm not sure that was the best idea I've ever had....Thanks for your help!

ya dawg! (except the cuffed jean, which you already heard from others). You are so cute Monica!

I've never been a fan, but you pull it off here. And YAY for free TJ Maxx monies! I always say the same thing! :)

Amy @ TheMombot.com said...

Ah, yeah dawg. For shizzle.

I've done this with too-short dresses many times. sidenote: why do they make dresses so short? Even at 16, I don't recall wanting my hanes showing when I bent over...

Anyway, you look super cute. I say it's a keeper.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! I LOVE the cuff!!! Booo to all those who dislike the cuff! And extra booooooo to all those gave this outfit less than a 10! Seriously, I love this outfit so much I just HAD to comment again. LoL! I'm pathetic, I know. But seriously Monica, you can wear anything!

10! I think it's so cute! Also, what a great way to expand your wardrobe by wearing a dress as a shirt! Love it! :)

Kristin said...

I'm with ya' on the no leggings under dresses - for some reason I never got into it either. I like the jeans and dress look here, but instead of cuffing the jeans, I think it would look great with a pair of skinny jeans. Very cute dress though!

I think it's an 8 for me... maybe depends on the dress.

I have to say I never really got into the leggings trend either... I tried it out, but it never really seemed to suit me.
You look gorgeous!

I love jeans under a dress! You look so pretty! I wore skinny jeans under a short dress a while ago on my blog. I HATE leggings too!

rebecca said...

The fabric is way cute and I love the cut, but I don't love it over jeans. Maybe you could be a cute slip underneath or something like that to lengthen it!

I agree with the person that said turn the dress into a shirt! I'm at a 6 with it, but I guess my real question is...how often would you actually wear this? And is it versatile, or is this the only way you can wear it?

So much so that you made me want to learn more about it. Your blog is my stepping stone, my friend. Thanks for the heads up on this subject.

I vote for a 10. I have definitely rocked the jeans and too-short dress combo a few times. I think the retro print on this dress works perfectly with the dark wash jeans -- so cute! And like others have said, since the dress is similar in length to a tunic, this works!
