Reader Submission

This weeks reader submission is Heather from Life of a Passeri. Monica and I have only e-met Heather, but I think she would be a bomb.com roommate! And look at that beautiful dark hair of hers, I think she looks straight out of a disney movie, like Snow White.  Snow White with style. Here's Heather:

Hello Dear Roomies,

I’m Heather, and I have problem.
I’m 24 year old college graduate who has a taste for childish things, that I don’t think will ever go away. Seriously. One of my favorite movies of all time is Quest for Camelot. I kid you not. Consequently, my wardrobe also, on occasion reflects my love for childish...ness...

Exibit A: Steve the Fish purse. Yes I have actually worn this adorable little vintage guy. Never to work, but when I am feeling especially full of energy, Steve makes an appearance.

Exibit B: Floral patterned rain boots. Need I say more?

Exibits C: Over-sized floral earrings. Tacky? Perhaps. But oh how I love them so.

Exhibit D: Heart-buckle belt. If you tell me I can’t wear this little guy anymore,I might just shrivel up and die. My life is in your hands ladies.

So the question is...when are you too old to be wearing such childish accessories, or is fashion all about letting your inner child free, regardless of age, or is there a limit to such freedom?

Are any of these items possibly too childish? What are your thoughts?

Thank you so much,

Heather from lifeofapasseri.blogspot.com

I LOOOOOVE the boots! :D SO cute! I think you can get away with these items as long as they're done right (like you are wearing them of course!).

Um, no! Almost thirty & I'm still wear stuff like that. I think it's all about how you carry yourself. Confidence is the key ...
PS LOVE the first pic. So cute.

I'm 32 and I still totally wear stuff like that! There's a difference between cute & childish, and I'm thinking you're doing everything right!
... oh, to be 24 again... :S

I love it all! I especially love the earings- where did you get them?

Heather, I think you're doing just fine. You aren't running around decked out in Hello Kitty from head to toe. You should see some pictures of me at 22, when I was totally immersed in the local rave scene. You are positively octogenarian in comparison.

I think your accessories add a whimsical touch without being over the top. Perfect.

You bring out your love for childhood-ness in just one piece. The rest of your outfit is classy and well put together.

Personally, it's those 'one pieces' that make your outfit unique and over the top.

It's in your accessories that you show who you are and your style.

I think you have great style and are doing things with a perfect balance :)

I don't think you are overdoing it at all. Just one cute little piece here and there. You are adorable and I think you pull it all off because of your cute haircut! :)

if i were to be honest i would say to keep the boots and earrings and lose the fish purse and heart belt. but i believe that it all depends on WHERE you are wearing the items. if its your weekend wear, who cares! wear what you love and let your personal style shine... if its to work... keep it simple, with a fun (work appropriate) accessory or two.

abbi said...

Ha,that's funny Lori, I think the fish purse and belt are the cutest! I think these items are small and quirky and the rest of your outfit is grown up. You don't look childish to me at all because it's just a small accent. You'd probably be over the top if you were wearing a floral jumper and pigtails, and a heart belt, and the fish purse, and.... you get the point. ;) You are adorbs!

So sweet!! I love the idea of adding a pop of youth!

I think as long as you're confident about the items you wear, then you're never too old. I might be kicking myself in the butt for saying that, because I for sure have seen outfits that defy any rationality and the confidence just exudes from the wearer, but hey, that makes the outfit, really.

Alright, so I think there's a difference between adding a ittle of "you" into your wardrobe, and dressing like a 10 years old, and you are in NO WAY doing the latter. You are just putting yourself into your clothing which is GREAT, and what we should all strive to do more. Well, maybe not everyone, but I know I should! I think the boots, belt, earrings and fish purse are all stinkin cute and there are no reasons to stop wearing them!
And I want my hair cut like yours really bad...I'm super jealous :)

small touches of youth here and there are simply lovely! as long as you're not crossing the line into costume-land, i think you're totally safe.

I think fashion is about being true to yourself. Now if your like 60 and wearing mini skirts with your hear belt we may need to have a conversation. Otherwise go for it! Oh and it you ever feel like Steve the fish is no longer wearable, hang him on the wall. He is a fun pop of color as a bag and a wall decoration.
Cheers,
Bre

There is a difference between dressing like a 13-year old and having fun accents. Personally, I would wear every single thing pictured here to work, and I work in an uptight government office. You don't have to always look like you walked out of a Banana Republic ad to be professional, fun accents are TOTALLY okay!

I love everything, except for the fish purse. It's kinda funny that you named it though. Age is just a number, girl! I just turned 27 exactly one week ago and everyone thinks I'm still 18. And really, I could care less about what others think about what I wear or what I do or how I act. I'm my own person. I wear what I feel great in! Do the same! PS- I LOVE your hair! =)

ditto to everything nicole said! i totally agree!

i'm also wearing oversized floral earrings right now! love them!!

I think the belt & earrings bring the perfect touch of whimsy, without looking silly. The purse is so daring and bold and even thought it's not my style, I have little negative to say about it. The rest of your outfits are sophisticated and simple, so you can play with accessories all you want!

the thing is you are not pairing these things with other "childish" things so you are making more of a statement.
i say go for it, just don't wear more than one of these things at the same time!

I think these are all really cute! I guess the key is moderation, so while all of these pieces in the same outfit might look silly, by themselves they look great and show off your personality.

you wear what YOU love! (And I love a few of those things too!) Who cares whether it's "childish"?

I love what you are wearing! I REALLY LOVE THE GRAY BRAIDED CROCHET HEADBAND! I look like I am twelve and wear things that make me look 8.... own it. When you are forty, reevaluate.

let your inner child run free! regardless of age. sometimes you just have to adapt it a little to your age in your outfits, thats all! and it looks like you're doing just that.

Hahaha! Hi Heather,

I recognized that fish bag when you commented on my child-necklace post! Don't worry, they all are cute and you're not overdoing it. There is a difference between "spruce things up with cute accents" and "not age appropiate a.k.a too much cuteness".

I say Be who you are! A friend of mine has very similar tastes, but always manages to seem put together and professional. I think the key is to find balance and not throw too many younger accessories in the mix.

There is nothing childish about that stuff! But I may be saying that because I have a weakness for floral prints and hearts too..i always call it old lady style ;)
