The Underpants Drawer

First things first, TODAY is the last day to enter the GIVEAWAY, so hurry on over and enter.

I'm the youngest in a family of all girls and when I was a kid we had an "underpants drawer" in the laundry room. Because there were so many of us, my mom would just put all our underpants in one drawer and we'd come and get them out when we ran out. I remember one time when I first started wearing a bra, I thought, "I'll just go to the underpants drawer because I saw a sports bra in there once". I wore the sports bra all day and I remember it was so big it went halfway down my torso.

Why do I tell you this pointless story? Well this shirt is kind of like that sports bra, I have NO clue where it came from, or whose it is. It is also ill-fitting.

So since the shirt doesn't fit quite right,  I've decided to turn the shirt into a dress. Have you guys ever seen this tutorial?? I don't know this girl, but she's AMAZING:

So, I'm going to turn my shirt into a dress. BUT now here's the problem, what color fabric should I get for the bottom? Red? Blue? Tan? I'm lost. I NEED HELP.

And since I will probably spend like 700 hours trying to sew this thing, do any of you have any tv show recommendations I can watch while I attempt to sew? I have netflix, so I can stream, or hulu or maybe some other resource I don't know about. I need some noise for the background.

I would go with red.
And if you haven't gotten into Parks and Recreation or 30 Rock, I would totally suggest one of those.

Samantha @ Moody Mama said...

I think bright blue or coral :)

this sounds like a fantastic project!! I'd say go with a red color :)

I thought red right away... Yellow or tan could also be pretty 'chic.'
Mad Men!!

Good luck! I'm hopeless with the sewing machine. But I recommend red (or coral like Samantha said) and Parks and Rec (like So Yeah So said, but I would have suggested it anyway).

thats such a great idea! the stripes will look awesome as the top to a dress... i'd go with a bright color- like a royal blue or coral, or even yellow to make the dress look fun and summery!

also, can you give us the link to that blog so we too can see the tutorial?

ha! That's hilarious :)

Go with either a kelly green or bright blue. Or go for polka dot or floral for a print?

Good luck with the sewing. My sewing skills are limited to curtains and pillows, and that's even kind of iffy!

Modern Family- You need to watch modern family!!!

Red or Pink. I would go bold with the bottom of the dress... Oh, maybe olive if you want to wear it during the Fall. So many possibilities. I can't wait to see how you recycle this found shirt. Please share when you do; I'd love to see how it turns out.

I would say red or orange. Orange only if the stripes are nazy though. Thanks for the link to the post for the tutorial. I have been wanting to start sewing and think I might actually be able to do this one.

Oh goodness, this will be an experience! I'm awful at sewing so I'm in your boat. I vote red for the color. For tv shows, I recommend Arrested Development or Curb your Enthusiasm.

Coral would look so cute, I think :) Good luck! I am such a terrible seamstress.

Oh, I'd go with red, but that might be kind of expected. Maybe a royal blue?

As for a show to watch... I watch lots of brain-sucking shows when we're slow at work. Nikita is a fun girl kicking butt show (kind of like Alias was back in the day), Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars.... Those are my faves. =)

i think it'd look great with a deep red- v classic and chic! xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams

royal blue. and maybe a contrasting color for the waistband (although if you're not too confident in your sewing skills, this might might mistakes show more). i made a summer dress like this a few weeks ago and made up the directions as i went! here i was thinking i had an original idea in my brain. it's my new favorite piece of clothing though, and i've already started working on more of them. you will be addicted!

Any of those colours would be great, it comes down to personality I'd say. But I'll toss a completely different idea out - a floral print!

muzikgenyus said...

RED!!!!! And watch Gilmore Girls while you sew. That show has tons of dialogue and just downright hilarious banter that you don't even need to look up. I own all seven seasons and I put them on while I work around the house all the time! Enjoy! And good luck! =)

Laura said...

how fun, that will be so cute. i would vote for something bright, like red, yellow, or coral, but really you can't go wrong!!

Linda Z said...

I'd do navy blue or black... whatever color those stripes are. I'm usually more subdued, so a bright color would be a little much for me. I'm sure it'll be cute no matter what you come up with! :)

Fab said...

This is so cool, maybe you should go with red. :)

First, you crack me up. We had a sock bag where all of the single socks that got separated from their partners would end up. No underwear drawer, though. Anyway, I'd go with a fun color on the bottom if it were for me--coral, blue, teal, red--but I guess it depends on whether you want to be able to accessorize with colors or you want the dress to be crazy-colorful itself. I wish I could give you some TV recommendations, but I hardly watch TV so I'm no use. (:

Mel said...

I want an underwear drawer, just because it sounds like fun. However, since it's just me and my husband, I think it would lose its allure the first time I had to wear a pair of his boxers under my skirt! :)

As for the shirt-to-dress conversion...the possibilities are endless. So many colors would look GORGEOUS! However, I instantly thought of this when you asked: http://www.shabbyapple.com/p-955-gondola.aspx. Obviously it would be reversed for you, but I think that great kelly green with your blonde hair would be sublime.

Red, or turquoise, or even a fun floral print would be fantastic. (Ooooh, something with black and orange and green and turquoise!? Awesome!)

No suggestions for you to watch... sorry about that. But for the skirt...I really like the color of that girls skirt. The sort of light gray. ummm another print could be very cute! a foral one perhaps?

Savannah said...

This is a great idea! I don't know about color, red is classic. I might go for pink just to switch it up though. Oh and I love your shoes!

a girl with a smile said...

I'd say mustard yellow! Cause I'm complex like that ;)

livingspreethegoodlife said...

Hard to tell what color the stripes are (black? Navy?) I'd say navy bottom OR a brighter color like teal or mustard yellow (like @girl with a smile suggests :-)

Kelly said...

Oooh any colour would be wonderful with black and white stripes! I'm not a huge fan of red, so I wouldn't go with it personally, but it would look great on you. So would blue!

I wish I had a picture of the skirt you were wearing when you got sent home from a Mock Trial competition in 11th grade...Gordon Park, the coach, thought it was way too tight for a high school girl to be wearing into a court room. You were completely innocent, of course, but your innate thriftiness must have kept you from retiring something that shouldn't have been worn beyond being 5'2" and in the eighth grade!

Red! Do red..and any mindless reality tv show would be great..or Weeds..that show is getting crazy. lol!

What a really good idea to salvage a shirt that doesn't fit- I can't wait to see the results! I'm totally bookmarking this tutorial. As far as fabric- I say red for something classic or hot pink for something bright! Hmm, TV...I've been watching the Tudors on Netflix recently because the 3rd and 4th seasons just came online so you could watch that if you're into period dramas!

Also, I'm have a giveaway too and I would love it if you entered! :)

The shirt-to-dress project is a great idea. I'm not sure what your TV tastes are, but I'm recommending my favorite British import, Doctor Who. The whole series is on instant streaming and features a series of attractive British guys as a 900-year-old time traveler. I promise it makes more sense when you watch it.

I actually think the shirt looks fine the way it is...and those shoes are darling.

As for color, I would go with something bright-maybe a yellow, orange, or red. Yeah...red with the stripes will be totally hot. And I think it should fit more like a pencil skirt rather than an A-line skirt.

red is a classic, but i think a kelly green would be pretty! for tv shows, i love bones, psych, criminal minds....probably my top three favorite shows! can't wait to see the results - good luck!

Tan would be very chic, but if you wanted to put a funky spin on the sailorish look, I think coral would be great for summer! You don't want my advice for TV shows - mostly I watch the Office and 30 Rock, haha! :)

Hi there! I like the tan or red idea. But I think red would look really cute, I think I see black button on your top and I think if you added a few black buttons to the back or side of the skirt/dress it owuld be cute!!

I literally havent watched tv in about 2 months, but when I use to watch tv I was all about Ghost Whisperer with Jennifer Love Hewitt, maybe they have re-runs ;)

Goodluck! I am looking forward to seeing the dress!

Hi there this is kinda of off topic but I was
wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have
to manually code with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
