It's a Rough Life I Lead

Let me preface this by saying that I realize when you are camping and hiking, fashion and style are not #1 on your mind. You go to the wilderness to escape everything and that includes constricting clothing.

However, this weekend while Bret and I were hiking I got kind of warm and instinctively tied my sweatshirt around my waist. You know, like you did in elementary school...
For most of our trip there weren't that many people, but on the last day we went to the heart of Lassen Volcanic Part and there were LOTS of people and tons of Europeans and I realized I might be the only person over the age of 12 with a sweatshirt around my waist.
After looking at all the Europeans, I thought, "Maybe I'm at an age that I should be tying my sweatshirt around my shoulders?"

I wasn't planning on asking this question on the blog, and I realize this is a silly question, but I feel like it might come up again in the future and I'd like to hear some people's opinions. Do you ever tie your sweatshirt/sweater around your waist? Around your shoulders?

Normally I carry around a big enough handbag that I just shove my sweater into it. Tying it around the shoulders gets on my nerves and tying it around my waist stretches out the arms. Whichever way works for you though:)

I usually throw it over my shoulders... started putting things over my shoulders when I was in Spain and I guess just never stopped once I made it back to the states.

I must still have the kid in me because I tie my sweatshirts around my waist!

I can't do it around my shoulders... It gets on my nerves and moves around too much. If I had to, I'd probably tie it around my waist. Or I'd make the hubs carry it. ;)

sometimes we did things as a kid because we were smart! I still use the waist.

I've done both with a cardigan and documented both on my blog. I tie my sweatshirt around my waist on hikes too. Cause what else are you gonna do. Hold it? Like an idiot? Makes no sense. It belongs on your waist.

I'm probably the idiot that wouldn't bring one because I wouldn't want to tie it around my waist. But if I had to, I would probably tie it around my waist before I would my shoulders.

i tie my diagonal across my chest. so it's technically over one should and under the other. i secretly think it looks cool and that way i don't have a sweatshirt/fleece beating against my bum with every step i take.

if you are hiking you can totally tie it around your waist! and around your shoulders just seems so hot and floppy when you are hiking too. and your hiking spot looks awesome too by the way!

haha, i think it's difficult to make a sweatshirt while hiking look too fashionable. but i think it's more comfy for me to wear around my waist though i would wear it around my arms to protect me from the sun.

i love Lassen volcanic national park. my hubby and i went long ago before we had kids. what a fun trip!

I mean, on a hike, it really doesn't matter. Whatever's most comfortable (i.e. around your waist).

i don't like it around my shoulders. i feel like i might as well be wearing it, you know? around the waist works, especially when you're hiking. if you were in the real world, you would probably hold it or put it in your bag.

if you're hiking, you can do whatever you want! in normal life, neither should be attempted.

Better you should say to each tourist you encounter, "Excuse me, Mr. Euro, but in this country it is considered de rigueur to wear ones sweater around the waist when needed...even our school children know that..."

If I don't have a bag, waist. Nothing wrong with that.

I actually recently started wearing my long sleeve shirts around my waist after seeing Atlantic-Pacific do it a couple weeks ago (http://atlantic-pacific.blogspot.com/2011/07/summer-uniform.html). Sometimes tying it around your shoulders seems a little too pretentious so that's when I opt to place it around my waist. Hope that helps!

Definitely waist....especially while you're hiking and it's warm! Isn't the whole point to get the thing off your shoulders in the first place?

I tie my sweatshirt around my waist all the time when I exercise. If I'm camping I generally look disgusting anyways so the sweatshirt around the waist would prob be the best part of my outfit. I don't do around the shoulders though..gets in the way and I feel like I should be at a country club or something
