No Shower? No Shampoo? No Problem!

Disclaimer: This post may or may not gross you out.  You may also lose all respect for me as your surrogate roommate.  If you are one who believes in personal hygiene, bathing, or have a fear of lice, please exit ATD at your earliest convenience.

People often wonder how I can go so long without washing my hair.  As I mentioned in   a recent post, I have a toolkit full of dirty (literally) little secrets.  It seems as though some of you would like to know a few more of these secrets and lucky for you I have a lifetime supply of secrets and I actually studied trichology for 2000 hours.  Okay, I just went to cosmetology school, but trichology just sounds a lot cooler.  And, my goal in life is to sound cool.

So, let's delve in, shall we?  Take the picture below for example:
Looks clean, right?  It's not.

So, let's discuss how to fool people into believing you're clean.

Wash your hair two times.
Yeah.  You heard me.  Scrub that little noggin of yours twice.  It goes a little something like this:  You get in the shower, wet your hair down, put shampoo in your hair, scrub it a lot, rinse it out.  Then, do this all over again: get more shampoo, scrub, and rinse.  You are washing and rinsing your hair two times-- one time to get all the gunk out (e.g., baby powder, hairspray) and one time to get the hair nice and clean.

Get scrubbin.
When I say, scrub that noggin, I'm not joking.  Get those little finger nails ready and scrub like you mean it.

Condition from the earlobes down.
After you have scrubbed your scalp nice and clean, you need to condition the ENDS of your hair.  Ends, being the key word here, folks. Your roots don't need conditioning.

Get your hands outta there.
Remember when it was cool to run your fingers through your hair? You would start at the bangs and push the hair back, but then two seconds later it would fall back to a middle part, so then you'd have to run your fingers through it again. Anyone remember that? Or was that just cool at my jr. high?  Anyways, it's not cool anymore.  Don't do it.

Get some baby powder.
Baby powder will change your life.  Blonde hair, red hair, brown hair, black hair.  It doesn't matter.  Baby powder soaks up oils and let's you go longer between washes.  All you do is put some baby powder in your hands (preferably a scented kind- you smell less like a baby that way) whip your head upside down and put the baby powder straight in the roots.  Then brush it out.  Then avoid giving your husband a hug while he is wearing a black suit.  Also, avoid going straight to the gym-- you may or may not come home with white all over your face.

Put hairspray in your roots.
A little teasing never did anyone any harm.  Well, maybe it harmed Hill Duff just a little bit. But, if your bangs are looking a little greasy, back-comb it (tease it) and spray it with hairspray.  Let it sit for a little bit, then slightly brush it out.

Lay off the products.
Hairdressers sometimes encourage you to buy a bunch of crap to put in your hair.  You really don't need a ton of products, especially at your roots.  Try to avoid putting products at your roots for a while and see if you can tell a difference. If you're putting something like gloss drops or biosilk in your hair make sure it is only going on the ends.

..and now for two dirty hair pics
That is all for now.  Enjoy the extra hours in the day now that you aren't showering, blow drying, and flat-ironing your life away.

I have a question! I'm all about only washing every other day. However, especially during the summer when I work out, and my hair is soaked in sweat, I feel like I must wash everyday. It's too gross not to. What do you do about working out? Or, am I just an excessive sweat-er?

You always look drop dead gorgeous and I'd never have guessed your dirty little secret. ;) Thanks for the tips!

I'm so with you! I wash my hair about twice a week! It saves on shampoo, drying my hair out, and time!

lol! Awesome! I'm always trying to go longer between shampoos, because my hair looks better when it's a little greasy haha. Gross, kind of, eh? Anyway, I just discovered "dry shampoo" and it has changed my life. It smells amazing and has some type of powder in it to tak the grease away. LOVE it! But now I'll have to try baby powder, too!

Great post! I have waist length hair, so I only wash my hair about two times a week. It's such a pain lol. I have used the baby powder trick for years and it works like a charm... waaaayy better then the 'waterless shampoo' stuff.
I am going to try the 2 washes.. never really thought much about that. I know it says repeat on the bottle, but I just thought they were wanting you to use more shampoo so you would buy more LOL! Thanks for this post! :)

I just saw the above comment... maybe I am trying the wrong waterless shampoo??? Or maybe I just got a bad bottle lol.
Oh, and not putting conditioner on the roots is also something I do, because my hair gets extremely oily and I have noticed that this trick majorly cuts that down. :)

I love you so much more for posting this. my husband still thinks I'm a freak for not showering every day {but he's stuck with me now so HA!} but these tricks really do work! It's unhealthy to wash your hair every day, it dries out your scalp and makes it greasier faster. baby powder IS my best friend. and so are you.

Ahh I really need to start doing this...it would save me so much time in the morning! I just feel so dirty if I don't wash my hair every day, which I know is all in my mind. The conditioner thing is a good tip - I always put it on my entire head. And scrubbing...need to do more of that. :)

Oooh...I almost forgot to add that I'm doing a really fun birthday giveaway on my blog so be sure to head on over and enter!

I do the 'hand in hair because of bangs'-thing the whole time. I'm growing my bangs out now because I got so irritated by them! haha ^^ hiar looks 10x less greasy now :) x

I've always gone at least every other day between washings but this summer I've spaced it out so that I'm only washing my hair twice a week. There were a few gross days in the beginning but now that my hair/head has acclimated, I love it! Saves so much time and my hair is healthier too. Thanks for the extra tips!

DUDE!!! You are my hero! I didn't know you went to cosmetology school?! And, you're getting you're PhD?! Geez!!! You're like the most amazing person in the whole world?! Go YOU!!! =)

You know there are people out there who never shampoo? CRAZY. Personally, I shower every day and a half or so, but have to do it more in the summer and less in the winter. I think that, the more you work out/walk/sweat, the more often you have to wash.

I agree with Carolyn ... sometimes I can go every other day without washing my hair but in the summertime and after I work out, I just HAVE to wash it. Yours looks so good "dirty"!

I don't wash mine every day, either. It's thick and curly and just does better if I go a couple of days between.

I needed these tips cuz I hate having to do my hair so much. Thanks!

I try soo hard not to wash my hair every day but I am doomed. No matter what I do my hair looks ridiculous and hideous every morning. No matter how careful as I sleep, or if i put it in a light low pony..nothing! my hair gets sooo dry over night (no clue why) and frizzy and eeek! no bueno. i am jealous of you!

Great post. I try as well very hard to not wash too much. It works out best if I straighten my hair.

Thanks for the tips!! I feel like I have to wash my hair everyday otherwise it gets really gross, but I'm definitely going to try the double wash and baby powder tricks :)

I love this post! I was just reading all about dry shampoos and what not because I have a terrible habit of not washing my hair for days! Which, honestly I don't feel is so terrible. You have really incredible hair! that second to last photo deserves a tutorial on how you styled it like that!

I'm definitely gonna try the baby powder! I wash my hair every single day and it's just awful.

Hannah said...

LOL. You are too funny. I have never tried baby powder! Sadly, I have curly hair and it just doesn't look good after two days, and sometime even after one. Lame sauce.

This is awesome! I have to wash my hair at least every other day, which I hate so I'm putting your tips to good use asap.

p.s. Hilli duff- priceless <3

I've known you for 12 years and I owe all my "dirty" little hair tricks to you and Whit! Remember when you went the whole week after Prom without taking out your up-do...everyday you would just add more bobby pins! haha love it!

Right now all my friends are really into dry shampoo. Ummm... hello! Have none of y'all heard of baby powder?

I think we must share a few of the same "dirty secrets." I pretty much follow the same hair routine you do. So I don't think you're gross, if that makes you feel any better.

So funny, I just commented on how beautiful somebody's unshowered hair looked and they emailed me to say it was dry shampoo! Will have to try this.

Just a quick add-on tip. Just because you don't wash your hair every day doesn't mean you don't shower every day. And if you work out every day, then try softly scrubbing the sweat and gunk out of your hair just with the shower water. It usually does the trick nicely.

love it! i stared washing my hair only twice a week the may before last and i swear it was the best thing i ever did! love dry shampoo and i hate products at my roots too, it produces way too much build up! great tips!

Ro said...

i live by these tips!! thanks to you and mom! if you are on the fence about the idea, you'll notice that your body will adjust and not produce as much oil the less you wash it. so give it a few weeks!
