I fall somewhere in between these two schools of thought. I LOVE stretch pants, but I don't think they should ever be worn just as pants. You know what I'm saying? The problem is, is that there is a gray zone, and that is where I feel I am at with this outfit:

UMM show off them gams! I mean, personally I should never...NEVER be caught dead in stretch pants. But if you have the legs go for it. Luckily my daughter loves me despite my dimply thighs and will allow me to hang out with her in my comfy pants. :)
I agree with you that they shouldn't we worn as pants, but if you have a dress on or long flowey (sp?)shirt (one that covers AT LEAST your butt) then you are most likely good to go.
I think your outfit above is REALLY cute and a good example of an appropriate way to wear leggings or stretch pants. :]
I definitely say as long as the tush is covered, you're in the clear! (And that dress is super cute!)

I think that this is a totally fine outfit to wear with them :) as long as they cover your derriere they're fine in my book ha-ha. If you feel uncomfortable you could always layer a longer tank underneath :) I think you look gorgeous though the colours are fabulous :)

Do.not.ever.wear.leggings.as.pants. I personally hate that, haha ^^ With longer tees and tunics, as you wear in these photos, it works, but not with a normal tee :) I would wear my leggings/stretch pants just the way you do up here ^^ x
That is the perfect length dress for them! I personally love them. I wear them as pants around the house and to the gym, but apart from that... only really under dresses.
As long as your booty is covered, I think stretch pants or leggings are fine. Under dresses or tunics is the perfect way to wear them, like your outfit here :)

You look cute, Whitney! I'm not a fan of leggings as pants either, but your bum is covered, so I think this is a good use of those leggings.
Stretch pants/leggings are NOT pants. Ever!
That said, my rule of thumb is that the bottom curve of the butt should not be visible. If your tunic covers that, then it's basically like wearing tights and you can totally wear it.

Oh boy, I have such mixed thoughts on the joy that is stretch pants. Let's be honest here, if you have a hot bod, you know no one will say a thing about you wearing stretch pants, long shirt, short shirt, no shirt. You're going to rock the stretch pants no matter what. If someone does say something, it's just because they're jealous they can't rock the look the way you can. It's those a little less comfortable in their own skin who think they have to cover their bum bum in order to wear stretchy pants out in public. And we all thank them for that!

I'm right with you on this one. I have some dresses that if I lean over my butt would be hanging out, it's so short, so I throw some leggings on. However, I still feel a little uncomfortable leaning over with my leggings covered butt hanging out ;) I think some grey leggings, or cropped leggings might work better with your outfit. Otherwise, I think it works.

This looks really cute. And a very appropriate way to wear them.
However, if you have a great butt, show them off. I see girls wearing them all the time with a shorter shirt, I never know who these girls are, but they somehow pull it off. And I always want to ask them how they do it. Because I'm not sure I could...
They should NEVER be worn as pants unless they have fake pockets and fake zipper area. But as long as the bum is covered they are a girls dream! You have worn them perfectly! You have such tiny legs they look great!
I think this is the perfect way to wear them! I struggle with stretch pants/leggings all the time. But I usually just wear them when I wear a dress that's too short for my comfort level or when I wear a tunic/shirt that's too long to look good with my skinny jeans!
as long as your badonkiedonk is covered in the back you are good to go!

I like this look! Butt coverage is the most important thing, but I also think dresses with leggings shouldn't be too long. This one is perfect. I'm not loving the t-strap style shoe though...maybe a wedge?

Love this outfit - so cute!! :) I really love lounging around the house in stretch pants, and I wear them out under dresses, like you're wearing here. I always see girls around campus wearing stretch pants with t-shirts or v-necks, but I think that's a little too much leg (and butt...)
My rules are as follows: Tights cannot be see-through. If you're wearing tights, you need to have the unmentionables covered 100%. Otherwise, enjoy them!

i keep feeling like leggings must be over but i really don't want them to be. i always want to pull mine out for under dresses and then i wonder, are people going to be staring at me wondering what on earth i'm doing in leggings in 2011? you look so adorable in this outfit though...surely there's at least a little time left for this trend?

Um, I wear leggings like every single day of my life! They're fabulous. But I don't wear them as pants.. I think that's just a good rule, right? I wear them with long shirts (they have to cover my butt) or dresses :)

I have been asking this same question! And considering the same kind of outfit you have on, but with a longer tunic/dress and boots.
I had a favorite outfit once, years ago, with a long jacket, leggings and boots, and I would love to recreate that bit most jackets aren't long enough. Your outfit looks great, though!

I love stretch pants. I wear leggings and I also wear stretch yoga pants. Especially, when I am not in the mood to wear trousers or jeans. I love wearing them. I never wore them out with shorter tops, but they are comfortable and look great under dresses, long blouses and tunics! I think your outfit looks great!!!
LOVE ME SOME STRETCHY PANTS! For real! But yeah, not with anything top that cuts above the crotch. I've been wondering where to get some cute ones (that don't cost $500 bucks), so thank you!

Love it!!! I think leggings with tunics look great. But my personal rule of thumb is that something has to cover my crotch. Otherwise I feel exposed. Tunics do that (cover).
I think they're best exactly how you've worn them - with a nice, bold garment that goes over the bum.

I love stretch pants and you wore them nicley. I don't like them with short tops but with dresses like this and long tunics. I wear them a lot in the Fall with long boots and a over sized sweater.
