For some reason I've always thought maxi dresses were a super casual look- like flip flops and a hat walking along the beach- kind of casual. I did not believe there was a spectrum of dressy and casual with maxis. Then the other day I saw someone wear a maxi with heels and I realized that maybe maxis can be dressy, too?
So, today I ask you, my faithful roommates, where do you put Maxi dresses on the dressy to casual spectrum?
I have photographed the maxi outfit in, what seems to me, a dressy to casual spectrum ranging from dressy to casual.

It looks fine with the heels, but I think I like it better with flat shoes. Personally, I would dress it up for work with some ballet flats!
I love the hat with it! I think everyone should wear more cute hats!
I think the heals look good, however once I saw the outfit with that cute hat it stole the show! It just seems more fun and relaxed and spunky with the hat. :]
I never thought about them with heels either, but looks great!
All of the above! That maxi is adorable!
Every look you have looks great! You look great with the hat :)
I think it would depend on the style of the maxi skirt. If its a more casual cut or fabric then I'd pair it w/ flip flops or sandals. A dressy print or fabric would warrant heels or ballet flats. Either way its adorable :)
You look so lovely! I think a maxi can be whatever you want it to be, if you wear it with heels balance it out with a jacket of some sort. x hivenn
That hat is so Knoxville...very cute. Any thoughts of joining a country western band?
I'm with you. I think maxis should stick to being casual. I've never seen anyone pull off a good look with heels and a maxi.
So pretty! I love maxis and wore them all summer. In, fact I'm going to throw one on today.:) I think they can go both ways. However when I wear one most people think I'm dresses up.
i love maxis... but they're a more casual look for me... and i LOVE it with the flats and hat! soo cute.
I'm starting to fall in love with Maxi dresses, and I think they're great for casual wear with flats or flip flops, and great in the fall when they're layered with a cardigan, a cowl and boots!! Heel...eh...not so much, but it does look gorgeous on you!!
i love it all, but i am partial to the more casual look! i love it best with the hat and flip flops!!
Depends on the maxi. I have a maxi that looks kind of similar to this but is perfect for the beach, and then I also have a beautiful blue maxi from Anthropologie that could never ever ever be worn to the beach. I don't even want to wear it to church it feels so dressy.

I think maxis work either way! They are so verstile and so very of the moment. You rock all the styles!
i like it the best with the flips and the hat. very cute! and heels in a snow storm?!? i live in CA where it never snows and I wear boots tucked into my jeans with high socks daily because i hate being cold!
i think it depends on the dress. but i prefer this one with the flats.

I think it could look wrong with the wrong heels, but I like the heels you chose. I love all three looks, you're sooo creative:)
Yes to heels. Although, I think chunkier heels or wedges are going to work better than a stiletto.

I tend to think most maxi dresses as they are today are not on the dressy side, even with heels. Sure, there are still plenty of floor-length gowns that are certainly dressy, but that's not really what we're talking about...
This dress works will all the options you've selected, but I would put it on the less dressy to casual side of the spectrum for sure! So cute!
I think like with other non-maxi dresses as well, they can be both casual or dressed up depending on the shoes and the accessories. I'm really coming to understand how the accessories make all the difference in defining what an outfit will be like, so I think you can do either, Monica! Both looks are fantastic on you. Go to the farmer's market in the morning in your flip flops and hat, and kick them off and add some heels for a date night that same day!
Absolutely they can be both ways, and you are a walking (or stumbling) advertisement for dressy or casual maxi looks! Just wish there was another word for these things, I cannot not think of feminine products when I see the name.. ;)
The thing I love most about maxis are their versatility. They are great with heels, especially with their length. But they are also so comfy, they can be great with sandals and a floppy hat. I've worn them both ways on my blog and you really can't go wrong! I love your hat in these and the heels. Win win!
i think a maxi can go either way depending on the accessories and shoes you put with it
i wouldn't wear stilletos with one, but chuncky heels for sure!

I usually wear sandals or wedges with maxis, but I really like your heels with this particular dress. Very cute! :)
i've never thought of putting heels with maxis. it looks nice but i think i still prefer the flats look. also, the hat...adorable!
That specific dress, with that specific pair of heels... LOVE IT! I thought the same thing too... maxis with flip flops. But I like the dressy look too! I say, you rock them both!
Both..I think maxis are very versatile. You look amazing :)

I have never known what to wear with maxi skirts as well, but would probably go with open toe sandals or flip flops. :)
You look adorable in this outfit!

to be perfectly honest, I prefer maxis paired with a more casual look like sandals. The heels just look kind of awkward to me.
For me heels would actually ruin my whole purpose of wearing a maxi! I think maxi dresses scream comfort & ease so I always pair mine with comfortable flops or flats. I think it looks okay dressed up with heels, just not for me.
I love maxis any way they can be worn! Hello comfort! I really love yours with the heels and maybe the heels and hat kind of a combo between dressy and not :)
I think all your styling of that maxi dress look great! Depending on the situation, it could be worn casual and dressy.
You look fantastic in both versions. I think you picked the perfect heels to wear with the dress. It really would depend on the heels but those are terrific.

P.S. Beautiful dress!
Monica! I am loving that last photo of you in the hat on the road. So beautiful and at ease! I'm in agreement with most that there's no right or wrong way to wear the maxi--you look great either way.
for me, maxis are on the casual side (thats bec they are so comfy as PJ's - haha). but you look gorgeous in this printed one with cardi and heels - perfection!

I think maxis can do it all! They already have a formal element because they are so long. But in their current resurrection, they seem to be more on the casual side. I think it partially depends on how you accessorize it.
I love this dress, with the cardigan and hat. It's one of my favorite outfits:) I loves the colors and it all goes so well together. I tend to wear my maxi dresses on the casual side with a jean jacket or cardigan. But I agree that a maxi dress can be worn casual or dress up, but I just love it casual:) You look great!!
I love it casual, but it all looks great.
I have not decided if I can wear a Maxi yet. I think I'm too short to pull it off!
Super fun post for WIWW! Love the conversation!
