Like today. I spend about 98% of my weekends wearing the same long sleeved blue nike running shirt. Bret and I do a lot of hiking/biking on Saturdays, so you can imagine my dismay when Bret took this picture and I looked on the veiwfinder and saw two huge oil stains. Uhh?? How had he not noticed and told me, or more importantly, where did they come from? and what the heck was I eating that is so oily? oh donuts? pigs in a blanket? kettle chips?
I've looked online for some remedies, but I'm curious if any of you have ever had success getting oil out of clothing?? Any tips would be VERY much welcomed, because if I don't get it out, I'll probably continue to wear it, but if I ever have my picture taken, I'll have to turn to my side:
We do most our hiking in Northern California in a place called Point Reyes that I LOOVEEE. I'm curious, where is your favorite place to hike/spend outdoors time? (I ask because I love doing things outside when I visit new places, so I can add all of your recommendations to my list).
Here are some more pictures of Point Reyes (on this particular hike there is a lake with a rope swing and then at the end a waterfall onto the beach):

i had a shirt that i loved but then got an oil stain on it and i thought it was ruined. UNTIL i was at my in-laws for vacation and decided to try my mother-in-law's Shout Advanced gel and now that stain is gone!! no joke! and it was there for months and months and months. so.... worth a try!!
and i love those pictures :)
and sorry this might be my first comment but i've been reading your blog for a while :)
I love that you demonstrated how you will turn to the side for future pictures. I have no remedy for you, sadly. But those pictures are absolutely beautiful. I haven't done a lot of hiking, but I love to go canoeing with my dad. We just hit up the local reservoir if we're squeezed for time. If we have the entire day, we have all the lakes of the Adirondacks to chose from.
The best thing to get any grease or oil from clothing is talcum powder. Lay the cloth flat and tip a good amount on top to cover the stain, then leave. The powder will soak up the oil and it should be as good as new, then wash as usual. This will also work on old stains that have already been through the wash. I have used this many times so I know it works. Good luck and have a great weekend honey. axx
Dawn dish detergent works great for any oily stains. Just rub it in with a little water and you'll be back in business!
We carefully raised you by word and deed to be a couch potato, yet you turned out an outdoor adventurist. Where did we go wrong?
I use DAWN ALL THE TIME! And Oxiclean works wonders!
I saw on pinterest to put some corn starch on an oil spot and let it sit for a while... haven't tried it on an oil spot that has been there a while so I can't testify that this works, just thought I would share!
wow what a gorgeous place! xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
I need suggestions on how to get stains out as well, so... sadly I have nothing to offer you. BUT, I love how adventurous you are. I'll bet that Bret was sure happy to find you, a girl who's not only feminine, but also outdoorsy. =)I am definitely not that girl. BUT, I am a sucker for star gazing. In St. George, Utah when it is overcast, the sky is the most gorgeous thing in the world. I love sitting on my back patio just gazing at the sky and enjoying the smell of rain. It's incredibly romantic! =)
im SO glad you posted this!! i have wondered myself and often gotten rid of shirts for this reason... AND my husband came home with "new" uniforms for his new job last one and one of them has the same stains on it! (they're used... he's a police officer) so i cant wait to hear what works!
I hope the oil comes out, you have lots of tips here! That's the worst to stain a Saturday wardrobe staple. :) The hiking picture looks so pretty!! Come to Utah...so many amazing places to hike and bike!!!
I use shout advanced gel as well. Works wonders!
Another vouch for Dawn dish soap, it's worked wonders for me. Although now I am eager to try some of the other remedies suggested here!
those pics are great
love to hike as well
but the scenery isn't quite as fabulous and dramatic around here
have a great weekend

If I had a hiking place near me that looked like that, i'd be hiking there every weekend too! I am beyond jealous!
I've heard of Dawn working, but I recently used shampoo and it worked like a charm (it gets oil out of hair, so why not clothes? this is why Dawn would work too, I suppose). Just rub it into the spot before tossing it in the wash. Good luck!
hah, I wish I had some tips but...that's the kind of thing that would happen to me.
Lovely place! By the way, I gave you an award. please check my blog for details. :)

I agree with you on the stylish photo thing! I work from home so I spend a LOT of time in my yoga pants (God Bless yoga pants) which means I don't get many stylish photos. I love your blog, what it stands for and whether you like it or not you are already stylish!

This is a problem we have had on our house lots...alomst to the point I was wondering if there was fried chicken in my dryer!! I put dish soap (dawn) on the spot let it set for about 20 mins and it was GONE!!! I ended up tring this on old shirts that I had moved to cleaning shirts and GONE...I was AMAZED....good luck!
i saw on pinterest to use chalk -- but i've also heard dish soap (as lots mentioned before) works really well too. and goodness, that hike looks amazing!
Well, I don't know that I've ever gotten oil stains (I can't eat oily food for medical reasons), BUT: hiking on the west coast is just the best, isn't it? If you're ever up in Washington or Oregon, I have a looooooong list of recommended hikes for you. I posted some shots from a hike I went on with my boyfriend a couple weeks ago to Summerland, a meadow on Mt. Rainier (about an hour from Seattle). If you're looking for rainforests/mountains/hot springs, you can't go wrong with the Olympic National Park on the thumb of Washington. It's huge, the trails are ridiculously well-maintained (but not manicured), and the scenery is staggeringly beautiful.
I honestly thought those stains were sweat. :) you mentioned hiking. :) I hate it when the hubs don't say anything about when you have a stain on your shirt or when you have something in your teeth. :) not like that's happened or anything. :)
Shout Advanced. Takes anything out of anything.
Dish detergent. I soak the spot in Dawn and then wash it the shirt like normal. It usually works wonders!
Okay I totally have this one down! I know it sounds weird but I have 4 kids and you can imagine the grease/oil stains we get. I use something called Lestoil - it is an amber colored oil-looking cleaner that you can buy at Walmart or hardware stores. It comes in a tall bottle and you just pour a little on the stain and let it sit for 15-20 minutes (or a little longer if it has been washed and dried a few times but not too long, like maybe 30 min max) and then wash it normally in warm water. Voila - gone. Every. Time. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
We love to go hiking too. That spot is perfect. Our favorite is Jay Cooke State park in MN
Any powder safe for the fabric will work. Baking soda is best followed by baby powder(which is corn starch these days since talcum powder is bad for your lungs) or plain old corn starch or flour. Dish soap that cuts grease like dawn or baby wash works wonders too. I love Oxy Clean to get out stains but baking soda works just as well and is sooooo much cheaper, like under a dollar for Arm and Hammer-name brand. I even add baking soda to my laundry to help fight stains. Good stuff, hope this helps!
