Ramshackle

Last night I had a semi freak-out. It started raining and at 2am our ceiling started leaking and then huge chunks of the ceiling started to fall off and wasps started flying out... Wasps. and a leaking ceiling. and it crumbling around me. this is not an exaggeration. So I was like, forget this, I'm sleeping on the couch. That might have sounded like a good idea, but guys, my couch is falling apart too.

Luckily in the daylight I find this all humorous and I am just able to call my landlord to get it all repaired. BUT something needs to be done about my poor couch. Here is a picture of it during better days:

and this is when we form it into a huge bed (ignore my dirty apartment):

But now all the white has began to crack and is falling off. I got the couch off craigslist and we call it "The Cloud" and it is, well was, the couch of my dreams. But I can't be living in an apartment with a crumbling cieling, wasps, AND a crappy couch, so I'm in the market for a couch. But I'm LOOSST. Where is a good place to get a couch? West Elm? uhhh Pottery Barn? I've never bought anything not on craigslist so I don't know where you get this type of stuff.

Where did you get your couch? Do you like it? Any tips when looking for a couch??

(I promise I'll return to style/fashion questions, but I've got a lot of issues I need help with that have nothing to do with my pants or shoes)

We bought our couch from Raymour & Flanagan and love it. It was reasonably priced and it was the style we were looking for, micro-suede in a darker color. I also fell in love with the idea of a chaise while walking through Ikea to pick up some random furniture. We also looked specifically for a firmer couch knowing through the years it'll get un-firm (I hate it when couches sink all the way in).

If I had a ton of money I would but a couch from CB2 or Crate & Barrel. They're stuff is super chic.

WASPS?! From the ceiling!? !!!!

If you like Crate and Barrel, you should try their outlet store! Its everything in the normal store, its just discontinued or has a small flaw. For inexpensive good finds, there is also IKEA.

Good luck!

What a bummer about the wasps! What about IKEA? Also, Pottery Barn Outlet and Kittles?

we bought a new couch last january and we got ours at macys during one of their sales.

also i was so set on a pottery barn couch but i think they are overpriced for the quality. we went into the store and some of them were pilling. (jc penny has a lot of good knock-offs although i have never seen them in person.)

also check out this site (great ideas): http://www.copycatchic.com/

Oh goodness, girl! Not a good situation in the middle of the night!!

I would try West Elm, PB, Macys, Crate and Barrel, IKEA, Arhaus. I saw someone mentioned Kittles...they would be great too, especially if you lived near one of their outlets. I know for a fact they have an outlet in Indy.

ohhh my goodness! glad you can find the humor in the situation!

our couches are from big lots... if your in the market for a cheap couch that looks decent- thats a good place to go. however, i am now in the market for a more quality expensive couch myself so ill have to check out peoples suggestions, too!

WASPS??? I'd be so afraid!

I saw this pretty awesome deal in the Bay, and have been considering it for myself :)
http://dealdecor.com/ It's a sofa that is very similar to your current one, and is new for only $399, until 10/10. This site is like groupon for furniture, but the best part is, you can see the couch at a cafe in the Mission before you decide to buy, to help you make your decision!

Oh no! How horrible! It's even worse when it's at night and not much can be done to remedy it. It will get better. As for a couch, I got mine at Ikea, but I would recommend checking for local discount or wholesale furniture places. It's much cheaper than Pottery Barn/West Elm. You can also check online for discounted prices.

I do not know what i would do if i found wasps in my bedroom. I would freak out!! and dont get your couch at Ikea. I got the red couch there a few years back (i was obsessed with the way it looked!) but it turned out to be soo uncomfortable! i seriously hated it. pottery barn has gorgeous couches but they're like $1500+. Check local boutiques, they sometimes have really cute stuff!

Couches I'm no good at. We still have the one from my husbands bachelor pad and I HATE it. Crate and Barrel has some lovely stuff though.

Do you have a store that sells Ashley furniture anywhere nearby? They have good quality stuff in a lot of styles.
West Elm is good if you catch things on sale.

IKEA isn't a bad place to look if there's one near.

I would have totally been freaking out! I hate wasps so that in itself would have freaked me out :)

I've purchased a lot of furniture at Big Lots! They have decent quality items at GREAT prices :)

I agree with the Big Lots suggestion. I've bought two couches from them, one was Ashley, the other I'm not sure of the brand but I really liked both of them. And if you eat on the couch and are a spiller (guilty!) or have pets, I can't recommend microfiber highly enough. It cleans up soooo easily and you don't have to worry about scratching or crackling.

When we were looking for furniture for our house, we wanted to purchase from a local furniture store. There are so many advantages to purchasing locally - your money stays in your town, free delivery, affordable prices, etc.

Our decor style isn't really modern - it's more "rustic cabin" I guess. I knew I wanted (another) leather couch to replace the 20+ yr old forest green set that we inherited from hubby's parents. I knew I did not want cloth because I am accident prone.

Hello Whitney! Love the blog!
My hubby and I had literally "stalked" our couch for years. It was too expensive for our pockets but we knew it was the couch of our dreams! Then last year, we popped into the store a little look-see and it was marked as a floor sample and half off!!! We made the purchase and it has been the BEST thing we ever bought. My hubby swears he is going to be buried with it. :) It's from Restoration Hardware and it's the Maxwell couch. Happy Hunting!

love west elm. try urban outfitters. this couch is on my wish list, but seeing as how my husband is all about new and modern, he's not all about this olive green 70s beauty/sleeper--yup, that's right, it's a sleeper, too. brilliant, i know. anyhow, perhaps this could be the new couch of your dreams...and you can tell me all about how wonderful it is. btw, if you do look at buying something from uo, be sure to use a coupon (i was going to use a 10% off one they emailed me...) i'm always about saving a buck--or seventy. good luck. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=21118286&color=031&itemdescription=true&navAction=jump&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=A_FURN_FURNITURE

First piece of advice: suck it up and buy a nice couch because in the long run it is cheaper than buying a new crap couch every two years.

2nd piece of advice: don't buy a couch you have never sat on. Luckily you live in a major city so you can drive to all the big chains to test run the wares.

3rd piece of advice: check out West Elm (their henry couch is off the hook), Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, CB2, Gradin Home, etc. Believe it or not, even Ikea has some decent sectionals that will stand up to a few years of hard use.

4th piece of advice: look for discount outlets for Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, etc.

5th piece of advice: do your homework. Make sure you know what you are buying? Is it eight way hand tied springs? Is the wood kiln dried? Are the cushions made of down wrapped foam?

6th piece of advice: If you find an expensive couch from a big box store that you love, find out who manufacturers it and try and approach the manufacture directly for a discount.

7th piece of advice: Call me.

I see that Ikea has been mentioned plenty of times. I'm glad your readers know what's what. I've actually never been inside an Ikea... sad, I know! But I LOVE their catalogs, and seriously, they are AWESOME! I'd recommend giving them a look see. PS- WASPS?!?! Oh my gosh!
