A Maxi In The Fall?

Are maxi dresses and skirts summer attire?  I put this skirt on the other day and something seemed off.  It might have been all of the leaves on the ground.  The long flowyness just screamed summer to me.

But, what if the maxi is in fall colors?  And what if it is still in the low 70's in November? Does that make it doable for fall?

If your answer is-NO! Never wear a maxi in the fall!.....Please skip down to the comments and pretend that I'm not wearing this skirt in these photos.

If your answer is-Yes you can wear a maxi in the fall...which option is more fall appropriate?

A. Flowy top

B. Fitted top
Flowy top: TJ Maxx Fitted top: Shade
Necklace: F21 Skirt: TJ Maxx Shoes: Target

I like the tighter top - second option best.

I think maxis can be done in the fall, especially one in these colours, that conjure images of the holidays! I like both looks but for the season my favourite is the second. If it gets even cooler where you are, you could try a cropped leather jacket or a knit sweater.

With the right colors and pattern id say yes. Also, the Second top is way better

Maxis can be done in the fall if you keep them in fall colors. Add some boots and a cardigan too :)

Absolutely maxis for fall... my issues is with the open-toed shoe! Why not a pair of fun boots paired with the skirt which brings it from summer to fall. Second shirt is MUCH better.

I definitely think you can wear maxis in the fall. The second shirt looks great. I agree with the comments above about adding boots and/or a cardigan :)

I like this skirt for fall with the tighter top :)

I think if its 70 in November, you can totally wear a maxi in the fall. I love the fitted tee with the necklace look :)

fitted top - and TOTALLY fall appropriate!

love the skirt! I say fitted top. I still wear my maxi all the time.

The second looks lovely on you. I think the top is a little to... 'baggy on top, baggy on bottom'... And the black tee makes a really nice contrast to the skirt pattern.

I like the first option, but that's just my personal preference. And I've totally worn maxis in the fall!

maxis are totally fall appropriate! especially if you live in the south and "fall" sometimes still means 70 degrees. i wore a maxi dress last night {with a cardigan and flats} for a date with my hubs.

i vote the tighter fitting top :)

wear it with a sweater

I think that the skirt works for fall, especially with the second top because it's a dark color.

I love the darker color, I don't think the shape matters as much. (Although, I think the "loose on bottom fitted on top/fitted on top loose on bottom" rule still applies to maxi's, even in the winter.) I think this would be adorable styled with a couple of layers--a denim jacket, a belted cardigan, a pile of bracelets. Loving this!

I love maxis in the fall! I like the second top better but I think I like it more because of the color than the fit. I think you could wear a flowy top if it were a little bit darker of a color. And I agree with everyone on the cardigan/boots! :]

fitted! i like the color with it more, esp since it's a fall color

I just wore a Maxi dress to church yesterday! I definitely think they are wearable in the fall! I love the fitted top with that skirt!

I love both looks. So stylish. IN fact, I may like the first one more- it seems flowy and comfortable.

I like the second look! And I'm wearing a maxi dress today!!! So i say GO FOR IT!

No! But then again, I live in Canada. Still though.....it's too summery, I think. But if you need to - the brown top looks best.

A lot of people have poo-pooed the first look but I dig! Although I will admit the second looks much more fall-y.

I vote B! A looks too summery to me.

fitted top. looks great!!

I'm with Anonymous- I dig the first look.

I love the fitted top. And of course Maxis are appropriate for fall - how better to keep your ankles warm?

Why is everyone saying fitted top?? I LOVE the first top with it because as you know, I love mixing patterns. But they go perfectly together!

Sara said...

I think both tops can fly, but personally I like the fitted one a little better. You could also get away with a sweater and boots when it gets a little cooler.

I LOVE it with the second top.

I love the bottom outfit..with the black top...it is so so pretty!

Option 2, looks very fall. Great look for the upcoming holiday. Love how your necklace dresses it up. Also think that the fitted top balances out a long skirt. You look great, Monica!

the first look!!! all the way yo! but i also don't follow the traditional "rules" of what is appropriate spring/summer/fall/winter attire. plus i want it to be summer all year round so.........

First top-no, doesn't match, looks sloppy, looks like crap. Second look-yes! Perfect! Very nice!

Love, love, love that skirt! Perfection.

I would say the darker shade is nice for fall...and I just like the look of a fitted top with a maxi...but honestly, both options look great! As far as I'm concerned, there is no season for maxis :)

I say "yes"...probably because that's what you'll catch me in. But seriously, check out the Dec'11/Jan'12 issue of People StyleWatch pg 240-241. They say it's totally ok!

As for the two pics above, I'l loving the fitted top more.

Oh, I love B

Both look great! I think its more about the shoe than the top. Find the right shoe and it will look more "wintery" :)
