Opossums, Knees, and a Style Predicament

Have you guys ever seen an opossum hide before?  No?  Well, I have.  One time when I was in high school, I heard all kinds of weird noises in our garage, so I went outside to see what was going on.  When I turned on the garage light, I saw the opossum scurry over to a cabinet and stick his ugly face and long snout under it-- with the rest of his body in plain view.  He stood so still, thinking I couldn't see him.  I don't think opossums are very smart.

Well apparently I am not very smart, either.  When I put this outfit on, I was pretty convinced that you couldn't see my knees- just like the opossum thought no one could see his body.  I mean, I had tall boots on and a somewhat long skirt on.  It wasn't until later, when I viewed these photos, that I realized my knees had been showing all day.  I practically have two large arrows pointing at my knees.  You guys remember how I feel about my knees, don't you?

Now that I have brought even more focus to something that really doesn't need to be discussed-- let's change topics to the real point of this post.

Black and brown.

Do they go together?
Shirt: TJ Maxx Skirt: Target Belts: Thrift Store Boots: Piperlime

I don't know.

And if I can wear brown boots with a black skirt, should the belt be....

......brown?

........or black?

To summarize, I have two questions.

1. Are black and brown meant to be in the same outfit together?
2. If they can be, what color should the belt be? Black or brown?

Black and brown can definitely work- and they do in this outfit! The brown belt works better, I think because it ties everything together. Otherwise it might look like you were originally planning for black shoes, but they were broken/lost/damaged so you had to pull on your boots! With the brown belt it looks more intentional. If that makes sense!
So pleased I've discovered this blog. I always love both your outfits :) x

I love brown and black together, and I think the brown belt pulls it all together. This is a great outfit!
There are many reasons I love this blog, one of which is that I used to live and attend school in TN, and I feel so nostalgic when I see your pictures. Thanks for sharing :)

LOVE brown and black together and I think the brown belt makes the outfit look more put together. :)

I love black and brown together. And...what the hell is wrong with your knees? I don't see the problem (aka they are perfectly lovely knees). Hah!

Agreed...black and brown definitely work...but it's nice if you have something to tie it all together...like the brown belt with the brown shoes. I particularly like black with a lighter shade of brown...but either way, looks great & love the skirt!

I'm a fan of the brown belt too. It has a little more 'pop'.
Also you look great, don't worry about your knees. I was really self conscious about mine for a long time but then I started looking around and here's the secret I learned (everyone's knees look kind of weird!!!!)

Black and brown can definitely be friends! (Not always, but it works today). Definitely with a brown belt though. Plus your skirt looks almost navy blue to me haha

I am always scared of wearing black and brown together but my sister-in-law always pulls it off wonderfully! I think they key is wearing the brown belt so that it all works together and looks more like it was on purpose rather than brown boots were all you had to wear. Haha.

a couple years ago, i wore black and brown together and one of my friends was giving me a hard time about it. She wouldnt drop it for the whole day. I saw her last week...in black and brown lol I reminded her about the "call out" and she said that she would never say that cause she loves the way the colors look together!
So, no worries, black and brown definitely work together :)

1) Yes yes! Black and brown can look great together!
2) I usually tend to go with brown, matching my boots and belt. I'd be going out of my comfort zone to wear a black belt and brown boots. (Which means I need to try it ASAP, obviously.)

First, gorgeous location for your photos! Fall just makes everything pretty!

Second, I think in some situations it works. Like this outfit, for example. But only if you do the brown belt. It makes the brown seem like a neutral and the black seem like a stand-out color. If you do the black belt, it looks "off."

I don't even understand the black and brown debate. Magazines are like "Black and brown are okay again!" but I guess I'm out of the loop, cuz I never thought they were "out" in the first place. You look super cute with your black and brown and white ensemble. I'd say go for the brown belt with brown boots because somehow it ties the look together more.

I love black/brown together...today I'm wearing black leggings/black tunic with brown boots. And I swear black jeggings with gray on top looks awesome with brown boots too. Anyways, I would go with the brown boots and brown belt together. And just think of brown as another color not as brown. If that makes any sense?

i love brown and black together! I would definitely say brown belt though

I think that black and brown works together here..but definitely thinking the brown belt would pull it together!

I like the brown belt with the brown boots combo. It looks alright, although I would've paired the skirt with a colorful top to keep the focus away from the black skirt. But I like how you paired it!

i love black and brown together. either belt looks great, but i think i might like it with no belt (not saying you don't look fabulous with one on)!

I LOVE the brown belt with it. Almost as much as I LOVE your stories. You guys are the best!

I think they definitely go together! You look great - and I'd use the brown belt :)

Totally goes together - although I often find myself reluctant to wear them together! That being said, the brown belt looks better with the boots, it looks more intentional and pulls the outfit together. You always look adorable though!

Black & brown can totally go together! I like the brown belt.. that way your mixing of the colors looks more deliberate. The brown boots may look out of place if there isn't brown anywhere else.

This outfit is adorable! Everything works really well together.

Brown! Love this outfit :)
why do you take pictures in a cemetary?

I recently wore brown and black together and LOVED them together, and I LOVE your brown belt with the outfit. It looks so much better than the black one! Also, your hair is totally epic today. I mean that in the best way possible, of course. I wish I could get that kind of fluff out of my hair!

1) They can be if you pull it off correctly, which you certainly have done here!

2) Definitely wear the brown belt if you're planning on wearing brown boots.

Also... your knees look just fine.

If there is one thing I learned studying abroad in Paris....

Black + Brown = Yes!

Love it!

I think if you're going to pair black & brown, do both the brown belt AND boots... it looks more intentional than a black belt with brown boots... just a thought.
And as for black/brown... i think it's a silly rule like the whole, white-pants-after-labor-day thing... i like white pants ANY time of year. Hahahha.

You look adorable! Great color combo. And love the bun :)
One of my fav color combos is black and brown. If the skirt if black I would wear a brown belt (just like you did).

i know black and brown is totally accepted now, but i still struggle with it. i just don't think it looks right. i'm obviously in the minority here though.

Black and brown can definitely mix, especially when there is white involved in the whole outfit (or a beige color) so it's not too dark. And a brown belt looks nice here - matches the shoes! :)

Rin said...

I think brown and black only work together when the brown and black shades are quite different, as you have done here. When you wear a really dark brown, then it looks like it clashes. I can't pick which belt I like better. I like the contrast of the brown on the black, but I also love the shape of the black belt.

Black and brown can be work together... there really are no rules anymore with fashion.

And either belt works. The black belt looks a bit dressier and then the boots add a bit of edge. The brown belt makes the entire belt a little more casual.

Yes, brown and black work. And your knees are lovely! But I understand body issues. I have issues with my nose. If I could wear a skirt to cover my nose, I certainly would!

I don't think there's anything wrong with black/brown together.

I know for sure opossums are freaky little animals! They remind me of ROUS's and make me squeal like a wee little girl! :)

You have to use the right color brown. The boots you have on are more chocolate. Black works best with cognac, tan, camel.
