Ridiculous

I'm leaving tomorrow morning to fly to Jacksonville, Florida to present some research at a national literacy conference.  All the big whig literacy researchers from all over the nation will be there.  I'm definitely not a big whig researcher.  I'm just a wanna-be.  And sometimes I think I make decisions that put myself deeper into the "wanna-be" category.

Like own a HUGE pink bag with a HUGE pink bow on it.
I don't know too many PhD candidates who own such a ridiculous bag.
Bag: TJ Maxx Shirt: TJ Maxx Jeans: Gap

I mean, I know it's a ridiculous bag.  But is it RIDICULOUS?  So ridiculous that I should leave it at home as I try to fit in with the big whigs?  It would be pretty impossible to hide when one of my literacy idols walked by....

Should I leave it home? Or, do you think it'd make a good carry-on for my flight? ...even if it is bright pink with a large bow?

You would definitely stand out. Maybe if it was black? It's really cute though, so rock it!

Cute bag, but I definitely think it's a little too much for a conference. Have fun in Jacksonville!

If there is one thing I have learned while being in the academic world, it's that you have to be yourself. Rock the bag. It's adorable and if anything, it's a great conversation starter which helps with networking!! =]

It's a cute bag but I personally don't think I'd wear it to the conference (where you want to be taken seriously!)

Lose the bag, but keep the homey bungalow. Wendy has some stuff that can help with the mold...

Legally Blonde was all I could think. I mean it's cute - but you might be taken more seriously if you took something a little less attention grabbing...

I like the bag a lot, but I would probably not use it for work-related travel.

It's a great bag for traveling. I love it!
But I would leave it in a hotel room and take a smaller purse everywhere else.

Hmmm... I think it's a bit much. Too big and too pink.

Pink AND Bows! How could you possibly even consider not bringing this bag with you, lol?!

I agree with above: you can take it if you really love it, but leave it in the room. There's nothing to squash credibility better than a giant pink bow bag. Trust me, I work with scientists and know their perceptions on anything fashion related.

I would take it no matter what. I love it. You can be professional & still have a fun side. If they're judging your intelligence based upon your choice of bag, they're not very intelligent...

i think YOU could fit inside that bag!!

i love the bag! and i think its perfect for a carry on... for a girls trip or family vaca... i dont really think its fitting for this conference. i would either take it for the flight and leave it in the room, or trade it in for a more subtle bag :)

This bag is AMAZING! While I'm not in the PhD world, nor the literary world, I am in the "I love this bag!" world... Very Legally Blonde... or should I say Literary Blonde?

TAKE IT! ;)

I'm also a PhD candidate in musicology and I'd better not tell you what ridiculous stuff I have in my closet :-) and for my subject you have to add, that the normal "musicologist" is very fare away from being interested in fashion... I think being different doesn't matter, even on a congress, literary is a women field, so they will understand ;-) Do you know Barbara Vinken? She's a professor at my university for French Literature (I studied it as minor subject, just search for via google and look at her website and you won't feel ever out of place with your bag - promise!) Good luck for the congress - do you speak there also about your PhD-project? xxx Anita
