READER SUBMISSION

When I saw Rachel's question in our inbox for a Reader Submission, I was so excited.  I have been wondering the same thing about sweaters and collared shirts-- and layers in general.  We're so glad to have Rachel here today, we've been loving her blog.  Can't wait to see what ideas you guys have.

Hey Ask the Duplex Readers!
My name is Rachel and I blog over at xoxo Rachel Sayumi.
So. I have a legit question.
I love the sweater + collared shirt combo that's going around right now.
It's seriously so classy,polished,and trendy & I LOVE IT!
However...
I feel that when I try it, my body looks totally lumpy and chunky.
It kind of makes me look fat, to be blunt!
How the heck do you make it look good?? What are some tips to pull the look off without looking silly? I want to be like the cool kids in my sweater and collared shirt, but without feeling rather large.
Any advice for me?! I'd love to hear your insights.
Thanks so much,e-roommates and thanks to Monica and Whitney for letting me be here!
xoxo
Rachel Sayumi.

I would probably go for a fairly thin knit sweater and a fairly fitted one to keep from feeling too bulky, but not too thin - it needs a little structure and shape of its own or otherwise the blouse can be all bunchy or the buttons show through. You could also add a belt to define your waist; that always makes me feel thinner. Also, I have come to the realization that some button downs just don't work under something, and some sweaters just don't work over something - if you have to fuss with it all day to keep it smooth, it's not worth it to me!

I never thought I'd say this but I'm actually a big fan of the Victoria's Secret leotard blouses. They've started selling them other places too for cheaper, like Forever 21. They are perfect for tucking into pants for work AND for wearing under other layers because they stay close to your skin and smooth.

Fitted button-up, slim-cut sweater. Tuck your shirt in to your pants if it tends to bunch up. And, um, I don't know how to say this, but as lovely as that sweater is, the sheer, horizontal stripes layered over black--which just looks like a dark gray, thick, horizontal stripe-- is perhaps not the best tactic to look slimmer. Try to get some vertical thing going, a v-neck, you can go pretty deep because of the button-up underneath. Wear a long necklace to emphasize the vertical. You've got good bones here, just needs a little tweaking.

I have one collard shirt/ sweater combo that I like to wear. My trick? The button-up shirt is fitted and one size smaller than I would ever wear just by itself. It is big enough just to button up. That way it doesn't get so bunchy underneath.

i worked at Coach for 4 years and we had to wear button up shirts and sweaters as part of dress code. the only way to make them not bunchy was to tuck your shirt in...its a bit more formal that way though : / and you dont look fat at all in this! you are a tiny slip of a thing :)

sooo something that i have tried that works is that i will sometimes wear a tank top under the sweater, but over the button up. i tucked it all into a skirt and it worked pretty well. just an idea.

just make sure the shirt is really fitted, and the sweater is either really lean and fitted, OR a crop sweater. the benefits of it being a crop sweater is that if it cuts high, your midsection shows and if your shirt is fitted, people will be able to see your very obviously tiny waist.
also i dont know that you really look fat in it because your legs are so thin!
youre a cutie, and and clearly pull of anything!

Belt it, girl! Here are some examples!

Also, make sure the sweater isn't as loose as you'd think. Sometimes, yes, the sweater can be too tight for the shirt, but more often than not, it's a too-loose sweater that makes the look seem sloppy!

Good luck, ladybird!

I have to agree with those who said "Belt it."

Also, before I read the post I totally thought you were Erin from The Office.

I am so excited this question is on here. I have tried this look as well with fitted un patterned items and I still look bulky so thanks everyone and thanks Monica and Whitney for posting!

i feel like if you were wearing a brighter colored shirt under your sweater I would like it better. I'm a big fan of bright colors mixed with bright colors.
