Socks and Sandals

In high school I had a huge crush on a boy who wore socks and sandals. Like tevas. I thought it was so great how he didn't care at all, I mean socks and sandals is pretty bad.

I tell that small tidbit because everytime I wear tights and open toe shoes I feel a little socks and sandals-ish. Is there some unspoken rule that I'm not supposed to wear tights with open toe shoes?

This is my "hand on the hips pose because I just ate 4 slices of pizza"
Is it always a no-no? Or if it's not too noticeable it's okay?

I think as long as the line of your tights isn't showing too awkwardly it can work. Also, LOVE this outfit! It's fun to see you in something a little more feminine. And I don't mean that in a bad way, its just more girly than normal. Super cute :)

I do this all the time! If I didn't I would only have like 2 pairs of shoes to wear in the winter.

It's fine as long as the peep toe isn't too big and the seam of your tights doesn't show. If you're talking open-toed-as-much-as-Tevas, then it's a definite "NO!" But this look, with the little peep toe and no visible seams, is perfectly respectable.

It's ok! And so are socks with heeled sandals now - a la Kristine! Plus, you're totally tame with the neutral and monochromatic color palette. Nothing to worry about! :)

I think it works pretty well since the colors match up. And your outfit is soooo cute!

You look adorable! I love your socks with sandals look. It's a do, for now. I tried it with black tights and cognac sandals one time. It was a hit.

Yes, there is an unspoken rule. I think the point of tights/nylons/whatever you wanna call 'em is to make it appear that your skin is that color. (Obviously, in certain colors it's not supposed to be "real.") So if you wear open-toe shoes and you have webbed feet due to wearing tights, it defeats the purpose of the illusion. It's kinda like makeup. You're supposed to make it look like you're not wearing any, except on certain occasions when you're trying to be dramatic. If you wear foundation that is three shades darker than your normal skin color, it defeats the purpose of wearing makeup. These things are meant to enhance what is already there or cover up something you don't want seen.

That being said, I think you can get away with it every once in a while if you wear it like you are here, similar colors. If you wore black tights and red peep-toes, I'd have to say definitely NO!

PS- I agree with Sarah. I like this feminine look on you! =)

You look great Whitney! Love this polished neutral outfit. I'm a big fan of matching tights to shoe color for an elegant effect. But have been known to wear contrasting tights, while also wearing peep-toe shoes. Whatever you are comfortable with is what's "right" for you.

I have had the same dilemma but ultimately I decided it is chic- the tights and opened toed shoe look is all over in magazines right now. I just took a flight and had plenty of time to research so just trust me:)
PS i think you guys were in my ward at BYU one year
