An Apartment Question for the Duplex

I've tried to make it a habit not to post crappy pictures on this blog... I mean like crappy phone quality, however today is different. Remember the great couch search? Well, it has come to an end! We ended up with this beauty (which is a true beauty in real life, but hard to tell over the phone/bad angle).

I now need to add some throw pillows, but I'm at a lost. I feel like I should invest in something that I'll keep around for a little bit. How do you guys feel about these two, are they too girly??

World Market

In real life it is more of a mustard
I feel like I'm the alone in saying this, but pinterest kind of overwhelms me. Is there any specific place you go for home design inspiration? Have you gotten pillows anywhere good? I've never really made a purchase like this.

Also, what colors would you do throw pillows with?

I try to keep them light during the winter, spring, and summer to keep it airy and light feeling. When fall comes though, my pillows are deep reds and oranges, just like the color change of the leaves around my area :) I also make my own pillows. Let me know if your interested in seeing the fabrics I have and I can make you some :)

There are some great design blogs out there, so Google pillows. The color scheme all depends on what you want in your home. If you find a great fabric that grabs you, pull colors from it to accent around the room. Have you tried Home Trends, TJ Maxx or Marshall's? Most bloggers say they get great pillows there.

From your two examples above, it looks like you are leaning to mustard yellow and oranges with navy. All of which would go with your beautiful couch. Just make sure to scotch-guard with baby coming. I thought it would be a while before we needed to worry about anything like that, HA! Little babies have "blow-outs" all the time. We found out early on, scotch-guard the couch! LOL!

When I bought a new couch and the old pillows didn't match, I simply went to the craft store and bought some clearance fabrics that coordinated with the new decor. I pulled out my sewing machine and made covers for my old pillows. I am terrible with a sewing machine and even I made it work fairly painlessly. Just a thought...

I have a cream couch similar. My whole living room is dark and light so I found some cute zebra print pillows at Ross (very inexpensive) then I bought some plain pillows at Ikea, and I bought covers for them there so if I want to change up the colors I can, I got a red to go with all the dark and light to break up and add some color! good luck and I like the couch.

Pillows are SO EASY to make, just find a cute patterned fabric that you like (fabric.com has some adorable chevrons and other patterns that would look great as pillows) and make them yourself! I promise, I'm like the worlds worst seamstress and even I can make pillows. Plus, they'll be more unique and totally "you"!

I love those cushions! HomeTrends, TJ Maxx and Marshalls are great for really reasonably priced cushions. I have a similar sofa to yours, in a slate colour and my cushions are, on each side of the sofa:
1. one large furry one - grey/brown (super comfy!)
2. A mustard/gold-ish one with reddish and orange circles on it
3. A small burgundy velvet one

and one single one in the middle thats a mix of all the colours - looks sort of Morroccan.....i fell in love with it and it was $25.

Good luck and most of all - have fun! And don't rush - wait until you see the ones that talk to you.

I second (or third) the making pillows option. Buy cute fabric and then get old pillows to make slip covers for at a thrift store-it's even cheaper than buying stuffing.

Just FYI: my mother made the esact same pillow as the second one (mustard yellow velvet) back in the early 80s.
Fun to see those are back!

making your own pillowcases is about the easies sewing project out there. I've made all my own and everyone loves them! try using different fabrics on the front and back and mix your patterns! my favorite thing to do is pick one multi-colored fabric, like that awesome World Market one, and pick the colors out of it to work with. you've got gorgeous colors to work with from that one. how about a pink chevron or a navy polka dot? you could do soooo many things with that palette.
