Hello, Duplex world. My name is Shannon and I spent four years in college eating cadbury mini-eggs and discussing important boy and hair matters with my roommates Whitney and Monica.
Unfortunately, we all live in opposite corners of the nation now so it is not as easy to walk to the 7-11 and grab 32 oz. of aspartame joy while we discuss important life matters such as what to do when a boy doesn't feed you on an 8-hour long date (true Monica/me double date story). So, I turn to you with a question of UTMOST importance. I need your most brutal, most truthful opinion. Otherwise, I may make a mistake of catastrophic proportions.
You see, I have a little bit of an obsession with Florence, from Florence + the Machine.

I lovelovelove her intense emotions and insanely great style. And because of this undying love, recently I've developed a secret burning desire to become a redhead.
I've never, ever considered this idea before, but all of a sudden it won't go away. But is dying your hair red always a catastrophic idea? Doesn't it fade fast to a blah brown? Won't it be hard if I want to go back to blonde? Shouldn't red only be the color of your hair if you were born with it sprouting from your scalp?
My husband says that it would be the worst decision I've ever made, but I need estrogen-filled opinions. Is dying my tresses fiery red a terrible idea (along with wearing matching footie pajamas to every party in college with Monica and Whitney)?
I'm the one on the left below...try to visualize that face with Florence red locks and then lay the truth on me.

So, what do you think: to become a redhead or not to become a redhead?

Go for it!!!!!!!!!
Do it! I bet it would look good on you. And hopefully your husband doesn't have a strange aversion to redheads!
I say GO FOR IT!
If you've been thinking about it for a significant amount of time, I always find that it's best to just GO FOR IT. Why? Because you'll always wonder what it would have been if you did.
Also, I think it'll look awesome on you.
I think a deep red like Florence has would look awesome on you! Just don't do it out of a box, have a professional consultation and you'll be fine. It's just hair, you can always go back!
I like you blonde - but I'm a hair virgin and forever will be lol so there you go.
i think it could work!! i would suggest trying a demi-permanent color first. it will fade and wash out much faster than semi-permanent (the most common type) and you can figure out if it works without committing long term. stores like sally beauty supply have them :)
I think you could pull of the red :)
that being said, with your shade of blonde, going Florence red would be a pretty permanent change. Even if you used a demi-permanent color, because of the strong nature of red pigments, you will likely be left with an odd red-tinged blonde after it fades. Then to restore your original color it would take harsh bleach. Also, the strange fade color is much more likely if you use a box color. If you have a regular stylist I would ask them- they know your hair and are a master at their respective color line.
If I were you I would start with getting some strawberry blonde foiled in, and if you still have a burning desire to be a redhead [I'm a readhead, and I'm convinced they have the most fun :)] then go for it-- You only live once!
i was prepared to say "DON'T DO IT!" (because of my own hair-dying experiences--went really dark, it washed me out, then faded to a weird red that was not meant for me. and that's the color my hair was for my wedding. YES!)
but when i scrolled down to see your picture i could suddenly visualize it. i think you would look fantastic as a redhead!
you could totally pull off red. Red fades out of my hair really fast, so I don't know how long it would last, but it's worth a shot!
I actually think you would look great as a redhead. It would take a lot of work to maintain, though, so just keep that in mind.
You have to coloring for it so I say - go for it! I am a former blonde who went red about a year ago. You can see my posts about it here and here. I color my hair with henna because I wanted to find a natural way to color my hair without chemicals. Coloring with henna is super easy and fun, although it is time consuming.
Good Luck and please come back and show us your new look!
I think it would look great, and I loved mine but the upkeep is terrible and getting back to your original color is hard. As a blonde that has done the redhead thing - I wouldn't recommend it, but if you do, get it professionally done. I dyed my hair red the color of that picture in 08. It's extremely hard to keep in - you have to use special shampoo, wash your hair in cold water and it will still fade in like 2 weeks. So you have to keep dyeing it and eventually it turns a dark fake purply color. Long story short, I started trying to get back to my natural hair color 2 years ago and it took about 5 different colors done professionally to finally get back to my natural color (they can't bleach too much at once because your hair could get really damaged). I ended up giving up when I got pretty close to my color because I was tired of dyeing my hair & it was getting really damaged so I just started letting it grow out. The last 4 inches of the ends of my hair are STILL a different color than the rest of my hair and my hair grows FAST. So if your hair grows slow it will take even longer. So overall it looks cute, but only do it if you are certain you want to deal with that maintenance and get it professionally done and be aware that your hair won't be your natural color for a long time.
Your hair won't be your natural color for a long time after you decide to stop dyeing it is what I meant :)
Do it Shannon... but only if you'll keep it up. Red fades soooo fast and you'll need to keep it freshly dyed to look best. But it'll for sure suit you!
Well, you know how I feel about red heads (after all, I did marry one)! You've got Raul in your corner, what could go wrong?! I say go for it. And on the off chance it goes poorly, we'll go buy Sprinkles cupcakes and drink lots of sodie and everything will be fine.
I thought it would be fun to die my hair dark brown and it was bad, bad, bad--even though the dye job itself was actually well done. It realllllly is a pain to get back to a normal-ish color and I've only finally succeeded after well over a year of patiently trying. I haven't gone back to blonde-blonde yet, but it has taken a real shift in my identity and my self esteem took plenty of hits. Maybe you could invest in a wig instead???????
Oh, and was that Brad and Eric who didn't feed you? I will personally defend you girls, if that was the case.
I'm a dirty blonde and have gone red. The thing is, I wanted to try auburn, but because my hair is so light, it came out like fire engine red and I was really embarrassed about it . . . but I got a lot of compliments. So I would say, go a more subtle darker red first just to be safe and if you want it more BAM! Then you can do it later : )
You don't know me..I'm Monica's cousin..also a hairdresser. From personal experience, getting red out is a nightmare!! I would recommend doing a really light weave of red. Then if you hate it, it's a lot easier to weave more blonde back in to cover it.But it would give you just a hint of red to see if you like it, before you go all out.
It would LOOk good, but just to echo what other poster have already said: it's a TON of work. It's not a good short term decision. I was blonde and went red a few years ago and I was dying my hair every two weeks, using a pigment depositing shampoo, and washing my hair in cold water. After a couple months I gave up and it was like 3-4 full foil sessions to get blonde again. I eventually ended up cut my hair off because it was pretty damaged (I have have really damage resistant hair but it was ROUGH). But if it's a permanent change it might be worth it. My sister have short hair that I dye red for her and on virgin hair (not at all chemically processed in any way) the red stays better.
I've had the hair change bug a few time in my life but I doubt that going red is one I'll relive again.
Go to a wig shop and try a red one on! See how it looks. It's not a perfect example, but it'll help. You could also try a non-permanent colour or henna first, since your hair is probably light enough to take either one pretty well.
I went red about...mmm...10 years ago? I'm 25 but I started because my hair was this gross combo of copper at the ends and mouse brown at the roots and I went for a shade in the middle to even it out. I've switched shades a number of times since then, and I found a colour so close to my roots that I can grow it out for two months and no one notices the roots. But going from brownish red to red is a lot different than going from blonde to red, and like some others have mentioned, I'm sure that upkeep with the red will be a pain in the tail. I do think you would look really gorgeous with red hair though!
i like carly's idea, do it gradual so if you don't like it, it's easier to go back. or buy a wig to try it out like monica said!
It isn't that you wouldn't look fabulous as a redhead. You would. You have good coloring for it. However, what then? If you do it out of a box, it's a very bad idea, it fades and looks tacky and cheap. If you go to a salon, you're looking at $100 or more every 3-4 weeks, if your hair grows fast. Blond roots would look really bad with that dark red. You'd have to constantly condition your hair to keep it from drying out from the dyes.
Your own color looks perfect on you, and it's natural, so I vote to leave it alone - use the money you save to get a fabulous outfit instead! Save 3 months' hair stylist fees and come visit Monica in TN!
I think you'd look absolutely gorj with red hair! :)Your coloring - skin, eyes, undertones would be showcased vibrantly with red hair.
First off let me start with how much I love your blog! This is such a cute idea. I always ask my own roommate about my outfits and honestly don't know what I'd do without her. I LOVE red hair it's so gorgeous and lustrous. I would suggest you ease into it. Start off with strawberry blonde and see how you like that. Bottom line, I'm totally for the red hair, I think it helps bringing out the pink in your face which makes everyone look a little sweeter. :D
