And that is where you would be wrong.
No, no, folks. I have not been eating glazed doughnuts (Knoxville doesn't have any good doughnut shops) I have just been using Retin-A. It's hard to see in the photo below. But don't worry, you'll get to see a real doozy in a moment.
My face has constantly looked like a glazed doughnut for the past two weeks. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing more beautiful than a warm glazed doughnut on a Saturday morning...it's just not as pretty on your face.
And if you don't like the look of glazed doughnut skin....you may have to stop reading right about now. The next picture is quite graphic. I made it kind of small so you don't have to get too grossed out.
But, someone needs to help me. I can't go around with a glazed-doughnut-face forever, can I?
There has GOT to be some type of fabulous moisturizer that would help this extreme dryness. My husband has been telling me I should just stop using the Retin-A....but I just don't know if I have given it enough of a shot yet.
PLEASE HELP! Does anyone know any great moisturizers???
Or any solutions for my doughnut face?

hahah, Monica I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!! I use Retin-A as well and sometimes over due it (No wrinkles for ME!!! hahaha) Anyway, I found the BEST moisturizer E.V.E.R. It's called La Mer and it's ridiculously expensive and only available at some Nordstorms or Neiman Marcus (don't worry, I'm a frugal...there is hope). It's supposed to be a "miracle broth" and ridiculously amazing for your skin. I'm a total believer, not only because it cures doughnut face but it really does make my skin glow. SO, I live by the samples! I simply go up to the counter and ask for a sample. Since you only need the tiniest amount a sample will last you quite awhile....plus it's free!.....instead of $130 for 1oz (wowsa!) FYI, I use the creme instead of the gel....better for doughnut face ;) Try it out!
I did accutane and had a similar problem. During the day use Cerave since it's lighter. At night, Cetaphil's heavy cream works WONDERS.
I've been using Retin-A for over a year now... If the dryness gets bothersome, I cut back to every other night, and get substantially the same results. That helps a LOT. In the beginning though, that's just the way it's going to be...maybe the first few weeks for me? Then it got better. Cetaphil moisturizer for dry skin worked wonders - I would put it on right after applying the Retin-A, and then as needed. I think I skipped wearing makeup for the first few days that I used the Retin-A. Now I just use a normal daily moisturizer with the Retin-A, as I find Cetaphil to be a bit too heavy. But it works wonders at the stage you're at now!
I think a moisturizer isn't really going to solve the problem-- it just weighs down the flakies so you don't see them until the moisturizer sinks in again. You're skin is shedding-- it's not drying out necessarily.
1) Clarisonic Mia--- I bought one of these and it drastically helped with flakies!
2) Not sure of the story behind why you are using Retin A but I have been on a mission to fix my skin and I have been using a variety of different Paula's Choice products to help with resurfacing the skin so it looks younger and also helping clear blemishes. I alternate her two different types of chemical exfoliants and I am telling you--- WOW. Big difference. I use her 2% BHA liquid and alternate with the Daily Smoothing 5% AHA lotion and then once a week I used the 10% AHA Resist Weekly Resurfacing. The first night I used it I saw results.
Anyway, good luck!
Cetaphil is always the best or I even love the target brand moisturizer!!!

I agree that cetaphil does wonders, but I'm kind've interested in going and picking up a sample of La Mer like a reader suggested. If that's what you end up doing let us know how it's working for you!
Retin-A is heavy duty stuff. In my experience it isn't actually drying your skin so much as making it renew itself so fast you can't keep up. So for me the key is moderation. You really only need a very, very tiny amount 1x day, or every other day. Also, my skin acclimated to it a little better after awhile and it doesn't get flakey anymore like it did when I first started using it. I do still like to use Aquaphor on the corners of my eyes because they red and irritated from the Retin-A. It's insanely greasy stuff that you can really only wear to bed but it does the job.
Cetaphil and Aquaphor! :)
i don't know what that stuff is you're using, but coconut oil. it's amazing, i use it for everything! i wrote a post about it, here it is!
http://captivecreativity.blogspot.ca/2012/02/why-you-should-always-have-coconut-oil.html
Retin-A was too strong for me, and I ended up peeling and red all the time. my derm switched me to Aczone and Veltin. it works better.
also, we also tried mixing the Retin-A in with some moisturizer before applying. that did help. now I apply moisturizer first, then the topical stuff.
Cetaphil! A little goes a long way. I put it on my face every night
get cetaphil extreme moisture! it comes in a tub and you can get it at Costco for 10 bucks. It literally lasts forever! I slather that stuff on every night. I use retin-a AND I live in dry utah, it has literally saved my skin. It's really thick so I only use it at night.
Ok this is crazy. I've been using the oil cleansing method on my face for 5 months now. Google it, but depending on your dry/oil level you do a mixture of sunflower oil and castor oil. http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/
But it wasn't working very awesome. Now I Use an organic soap to clean my face and I use the oil mixture as a moisturizer...I use 2 drops of the mix on wet hands and just rub it into my face (sometimes twice, depending on how dry my skin is that day).
Anyway I know it sounds nuts, but it works. Read through the site for more info, good luck!
I have no suggestions but I loved this post and the comments are super helpful. I m not sure what Retin-A is but I have been using an Rx topical cream for breakouts and it dried out my skin like this so this post was helpful!
I use Cetaphil face wash, but my favorite moisturizer is Mary Kay Timewise!! I hate moisturizers that make my skin feel oily and like I have lotion on my skin. This is just light and perfect and I have extremely sensitive skin.
I swear-SWEAR- by this stuff. It's the BEST EVEAH! You will love it. I use the moisturizer and the face wash.

Retin-A is loaded with synthetic chemicals that are absorbed into the blood stream. How can this be healthy/moisturizing for your skin/body? Olive oil, coconut oil (best absorbed and least greasy), cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil are all much better choices; they're nourishing and inexpensive (drs. can't make $ from them, so they're not recommended).
Retin-A Gel contains tretinoin (retinoic acid, vitamin A acid), in a gel vehicle of butylated hydroxytoluene, hydroxypropyl cellulose and alcohol (denatured with tert-butyl alcohol and brucine sulfate), in a hydrophilic cream vehicle of stearic acid, isopropyl myristate, polyoxyl 40 stearate, stearyl alcohol, xanthan gum, sorbic acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, and purified water; polyethylene glycol 400, butylated hydroxytoluene and alcohol (denatured with tert-butyl alcohol and brucine sulfate.
I LOVE cetaphil lotion or cream, coconut oil, or Melaleuca's lotion called Renew, and also this organic shea butter, here is the link: http://www.sephora.com/100-pure-shea-butter-P39675?skuId=989962
I've used all of these and highly recommend all of them. I have really sensitive skin too, and have no problem with any of these lotions. Good luck!
Retin-A will cause some irritation and peeling. Infact I think that is part of what it is suppose to do... like it is exfoliating the skin? Double check that I guess. Some skin is more sensitive then others. If you find your skin is reacting, maybe just use it every other day, or a couple times a week. I understand the want to keep using the Retin-A because it is helping your skin with future wrinkles :) I use something with Retinal, is there a difference? If there is maybe try something with that in it so you are still getting something to fight off the wrinkles which why I am assuming you are using something with Retin-A haha If you cut back a bit on it I think that will help alot and also, I would invest in a clarisonic. They work wonders and will exfoliate your skin perfectly! If you don't want to spend the big bucks you can get the mia which is cheaper or they have generic brands I think you can get, but using something with the brush makes a big difference! Then yes, MOISTURIZE. Cetaphil is always a classic, but I have lately fallen in love the St. Ives moisturizing options. Morning and night lady!
I've used pretty much anything to get rid of acne. Is that what you're using for? Anyway, I had to go on acutane, which has been taken off the market because it causes birth defects in babies . . . and it basically sucks the moisture out of your body. So I had ALOT of dry patches on my face. Avon has this intense healing lotion that is really good. you only need a tiny bit so I've had the same bottle for like 5 years.
I love vanicream. I get it from the pharmacy at walmart. I'm not sure why it is behind the counter at the pharmacy but you just have to ask for it. I prefer to pay $1 extra to get the bottle with the pump as well. And, what I really like is that it doesn't have any dyes or parabens in it.
Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. That's dead skin trying to release itself from your face. Give it some gentle help.
if its doing that to your skin it is wayyyy over drying you aka not good! and i just use neutrogena's moisturizer or oil of olay (all oil free, i am the greasiest lady EVER!). if its for pimples try Neutrogena Skin ID. I have tried everything under the sun for my breakouts and Skin ID is seriously the only thing that has worked for me. I love it!! it will dry you out a tiny bit but you'll only know it cause your face is tight, it wont ever dry you out like this!
and yes, exfoliate!! origins makes an amazing scrub but it's like $40
I feel your pain, I've used Retin-A before. I really like DDF Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer for daytime. Equally as important is the cleanser you use, I've tried them all it seems. What I'm using now and really enjoy is by FRESH and it's called Soy Face Cleanser, it's gentle and removes your makeup. At night, I use FRESH Soy Face Cream with my medicated exfoliant. If I need an extra boost of moisture before I put my moisturizer and makeup on, I use FRESH Soy face serum. All of these products are available at Sephora. FRESH sells a skincare set with all of these products for $38 but if you take a trip to Sephora, I'm confident they would send you home with some samples. Best of luck to you and please let us know what you end up trying along with what works for you! Thanks! :)

I recently moved to the dry west and my skin dried up like a piece of jerky! I'm using murad's skin line (mostly their anti aging stuff) and use their exfoliator once a week and their super hydrating creme daily and it has helped a lot. the moisturizer is a little pricey- i think like 70. You can go to sephora they will give you a sample to take home and try out. They give pretty big samples and you only need a little bit of product so you can try it out for about a week to see if you like it. I also used to work for Origins and their products are great too. and you might want to try having a cool mist humidifier on at night
I also use Retin A and have had the same issue.
I use Clinique dramatically different moisturizer under my makeup. And one of their moisturizers at night... but when I'm getting flaky, my derm introduced me to Cerave. You can find it in a big tub at drugstores, walmart, etc... it's about $15 and lasts forever. Its thick... but after sleeping with it one night... i wash my face in the morning, and it's like new! Do that for a few nights, til you're flake-free. :)
Then go back to your normal routine and do the Cerave as needed.
When you first start a retina a regiment it's best to apply every 3-4 days and gradually work up to daily. Being so young there's no need to overdo it! There's bound to be some dryness/peeling but the slower you take it less irritated your skin should be. And never never ever forget your sunblock!! Retin a will make you burn in about 5 minutes!
Dermalogica Barrier Repair is fantastic. Anything dermalohica really...
I feel your pain! Anytime the weather changes my skin goes crazy and gets super dried out. TO keep it super soft and not flaky I use baking soda in the shower. (Yes, you read that right :) Just get a little bit in your hands with the water and it turns into a bit of a paste. Use it like a scrub and your face will be baaaaby soft! I only do maybe once per week. Then I use this great cream moisturizer from Now There's Hope. Good luck!!
Oh, the things we will go through in the name of beauty! But, it's so worth it to feel confident when you're makeup free.
First things first: make sure you're drinking the right amount of water. General skincare rule: 1 ounce for every # you weigh. I'll try not to get overly technical with product and treatment recommendation, but as an esthetican, and Esthetics Instructor, it's practically a sin not do a little "client" education in the process.
When you're first starting out, apply Retin-A 2-3 times a week MAX, only at night. It works great to exfoliate the dead skin while strengthening the healthy skin, but it's VERY easy to over exfoliate with it. Don't apply in the morning. The exfoliation process temporarily weakens your skins natural defense system, making the risk of hyperpigmentation increases significantly. Supplement that weakness with a proper Broad Spectrum SPF. (You should ALWAYS use SPF, but especially if you are undergoing any type of exfoliating process.) Choose an SPF with PHYSICAL blockers; chemical blockers can cause irritation. Look for Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredients. Anything else is chemical. No bueno.
In my line of work, I'm exposed to a lot of skin, and skincare lines of all types; OTC, professional, and cosmeceutical. A cosmeceutical grade product (meaning cosmetic products made with FDA approved pharmaceutical grade ingredients; basically the highest classification) with hyaluronic acid is a great way to hydrate the new, fresh skin. A gentle exfoliating cleanser will help get rid of the dead stuff. IMAGE Skincare (no, I don't work for them or get any kick backs for recommending their product) has great hydrators, moisturizers, cleansers, and, well, just about everything that a girl could ever need (including a Retinol-A creme, which is to die for.) The product line is available only through licensed estheticians or physicians, but it's super affordable. A cleanser is generally about $26-28 for what is easily a 4 month supply. (If you find Image online, at a department store, or grocery store, it's either being sold illegally and/or expired.) I have THE most temperamental, sensitive, allergy, combo, dry acne prone skin, and Image meets and treats all my needs.
Sorry for the info overload. Good luck with the product hunt. I hope you find something you and your skin love!
Drink iced lemon water! and eat grapefruits! They do wonders for your skin. I drink tons, and tons, of water each day. For summer I love grapefruits fresh out of the fridge bc they are cold. Lemon water is such a better alternative to starting your day with a wake up call than coffee.
There is a Krispy Kream in Knoxville on Kingston Pike across from that huge church with the tall steeple in Bearden. (Oh the church is called Central Baptist Bearden). I got to Krispy Kream all the time there. Plus there's Dippin' Donuts and Dunkin' Donuts too on Kingston Pike. Happy donut hunting :)
I'm really late on this, but Cerave is a great lotion. It is dermatologist recommended, too, and might help!
oZzy moved away a few months ago, I miss his cock, and I'm always hungry for making love.
