READER SUBMISSION

Hey, guys.  We are so excited to have Megan here at the Duplex today.  We've been loving her blog lately.  I am pretty sure we would be friends in real life.  Ever since I saw her photos (below) I've been wanting her skirt.  I love the length and I love the pleats at the bottom.  But, one thing is for sure.  I don't know anything about color blocking.  What do you guys have to say?

Hello Duplex fans!

My name is Megan and I blog over at {Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson}. I like to talk about marriage, motherhood, oreos, a touch of fashion, and all the ups and downs of life.
I'm really excited to submit my question to the Duplex today! I have had this dilemma for sometime now and realized the best place to get the answer was right here!
So, I really love the color blocking trend I'm seeing everywhere but am a total chicken with it. Pattern mixing, I can do. Color blocking, I go into a panic of self doubt.
So I need your help!
I found this skirt at a thrift store over Christmas break thinking I could wear it with lots of different colors and pretend to be hip and stuff. But now I'm having second thoughts.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Is this proper color blocking?
Does this outfit work at all or did I totally miss the mark?
Are there certain color blocking rules I should be following?
Help!!
Photobucket
[also, please pay no attention to the fact that this outfit (mainly the top) gives me no shape... a.k.a. curvature... a.k.a. you know what I mean... :)]

Thank you so much, roommates!!
I know you are all way more fashionable than my husband {who thinks any trend I try is basically the worst... what does he know anyways right?} so I'm really excited for some e-roommate input!

Love it!! I don't really think there are any rules for colour blocking - you can even clash as much as you like and I think it goes!! As long as it's not like crazy neon green and neon orange for a fancy dinner or something haha =D

I think that skirt looks great on you and I love that you added a belt. I would try to find something a little more blouse-y for the top though, so that it dresses it up a little with the fancier material, plus you wouldn't have to put a white tank under it for modesty since it's pretty easy to find modest blouses in the chest area. And then if it's sleeveless you can always just throw a [bright yellow] cardigan over it!

I like the skirt but I'm not feeling that shirt with it. Then again, I'm a chicken at this color blocking stuff too! Regardless, you look super cute and props to you for trying something new!

I agree with other commentors that the colors look great together and I as well love the skirt! Just give yourself time to get used to a color-blocked outfit because new things always take a little adjustment:)

Love the colors. Love the look. You look great.

I think that colour blocking should be done with colours of the same intensity. Either a bright blue with a bright magenta, or a soft blue with a soft pink....mixing an intense colour with a pastel-y colour just doesn't work for me :)

I think you're rockin it, girl!

i think you should do a thinner belt that is a color, and a colorful shoe. i'm not sure this top really works- it seems too casual for the skirt. i love the skirt though! i think having a colorful belt would amp it up though. even if you did a more structured white shirt with a orange belt and maybe colorful wedges? or did a monochromatic thing with a purple top? but you have a tiny waist and i think you could pull off a smaller belt. also, something blousier (yes that's a word) or more structured on top would go better with this skirt. (my opinion obviously! ;))

I agree that it would look more intentional with a coloured skinny belt (like yellow or orange) or a pair of bright shoes (flats or heels). I love the shape of the skirt and the purple-y colour and that pleated hem - so fun! Thanks for that colour wheel too, it is such a great visual to help with pulling the color-block trend off!

I am loving the skirt! But the skirt is more of a darker pastel of sorts and the top in the brighter category. Maybe a muted yellow or teal would match the look you are going for :) Either way, you are still mega cute!

I really like the skirt. I picture it with something blousy or a black and white polka dot blouse. I'm not sure if it's bright enough to be color blocked unless you used a muted color like the previous reader said. :)

You need a colored belt. With the neutral belt it looks like you're trying to match the skirt and top, but color blocking is about coordinating not matching. Any shade of blue or purple, or something totally different like pink or yellow would work for the belt. But keep the neutral shoes so it doesn't look crazy.

The shoes and the skirt are A+ I would do a wider belt. The for the shirt I think either something that matches the shoes if you're feeling less bold or I'm imagining a mustard color top. I would say the saem thing as the other comments in that you should maybe do a fancier/blousy top OR I can also see this with something really fitted and simple (probably a tank or a 3/4 sleeve) with a long/layered necklace.

It is color-blocking! It would look better if the skirt was shortened to around your knees.
